Scott, Hansson, Ciesla Post Wins On First Day Of SMU Classic

Trojans in second heading into Saturday's final session.
Senior Riley Scott, junior Louise Hansson and sophomore Marta Ciesla all posted victories today to lead the USC women's swimming and diving team to second place after the first session of the 2018 SMU Classic in Dallas, Texas, on Friday (Oct. 12).
The Trojans, the defending champions of the event, are in second with 152 points, behind Louisville's 180. USC edged the Cardinals by 1.5 points last year. Virginia is third with 149 points, host SMU fourth (121), Iowa fifth (120) and Miami sixth (113).
Ciesla won USC's first event on Friday with a strong NCAA B cut in the 50y free in a meet-record 22.18, 0.14 off her PR and 0.33 seconds ahead of Louisville's Arina Openysheva. Junior Kirsten Vose swam in the B heat, taking fourth (23.20).
Hansson claimed USC's second event with a 51.84 in the 100y back, edging Louisville's Alina Kendzior by 0.51. Her time was just 0.24 off of Troy's school mark. Ciesla was fourth in the B final in 56.44.
Scott broke her own meet record in the 100y breast, posting a 59.55 to lower the mark by 0.01, touching ahead of SMU's Andrea Podmanikova by 0.13. Scott was also second in the 400y IM final in 4:12.15, an NCAA B cut.
Junior Tatum Wade was second in the 200y free in 1:45.55, a season-best NCAA B cut, behind only Louisville All-American Mallory Comerford's 1:42.79. Senior Maddie Wright was third in the B final in 1:48.51.
Junior Naomi Gowlett competed for the Trojans on 1-meter, taking fifth (259.85). Junior Catherine Sanchez led USC in the 100y fly in fourth (53.76) while Wright won the B final in 53.06, a season-best B cut.
USC was second in both relays. USC's 400y medley relay of Hansson, Scott, Sanchez and Ciesla clocked a B cut 3:34.01 while the 800y free relay of Hansson, Wade, Wright and Vose finished in 7:09.10.
The action concludes with the second session on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. PT.
