No. 15 USC Wins Four-Set Battle with Golden Bears

The Women of Troy ended a short two-match skid on a win over Cal with four players in double-digit kills
LOS ANGELES – The 15th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (16-7, 8-4 Pac-12) snapped a two-match skid and defeated California (12-11, 4-8) in four sets (35-33, 25-20, 18-25, 25-14) at Galen Center on Sunday, Oct. 28.

- So. OH Brooke Botkin led all scorers with 24.0 points and had 22 kills (4e, 41att) with a career-high .439 hitting percentage. She also put up a career-best 17 digs to log her 10th double-double of the season (11th career).
- Jr. OH Khalia Lanier scored 18 kills (4e, 57att, .246) with a solo block and a service ace.
- Jr. MB Jasmine Gross put up 10 kills (4e, 21att, .286) and led all players with seven blocks (one solo).
- Jr. OPP Emily Baptista had 10 kills (3e, 23att, .304) to go with five blocks.
- Fr. setter Raquel Lázaro dished out 56 assists and posted her 11th-career double-double with 10 digs.
- Sr. libero Victoria Garrick led all players with 18 digs and Sr. defender Reni Meyer-Whalley had 13.
- Four Golden Bears had 10 kills or more, led by Preslie Anderson (13). Bailee Huizenga recorded 12; Lauren Forte had 11, and Maddie Haynes had 10. Isabel Potter put up 47 assists and had 15 digs for the double-double.
- The Trojans led by as many as five points twice in the first set; the last time at 17-12. Unphased, the Bears caught USC at 18-all and took the first set point at 24-23. The teams traded barbs to their 24th tie before back-to-back kills by Lanier and a service ace by Garrick sealed a 35-33 USC win after 68 rallies. Lanier had nine of her kills in the opening set alone.
- The second set was equally as tight through the first 24 rallies. After 12 ties, the Trojans took the first sizable lead at 14-12 and then opened up a big 20-14 gash. The Bears gave chase, but USC closed the set with kills by Botkin for a 25-20 win.
- Cal flipped the script on the Trojans in the third and rolled to a 7-0 lead and then a big 9-1 advantage. USC closed within three points at 17-14, but the Bears stepped on the gas again and rolled away with a 25-18 win to force the fourth set.
- The Trojans forced Haynes into four straight errors to open the fourth frame. USC hit .259 and got five kills from Botkin and four from Baptista en route to a 25-14 win.
- USC returns to the road for matches in Oregon this week. The Trojans take on No. 16 Oregon (15-7, 8-4 Pac-12) at Matt Knight Arena in Eugene, Ore., on Friday, Nov. 2. USC then heads to Corvallis, Ore., for a Sunday (Nov. 4) matinee match with Oregon State (11-13, 1-11). Both of USC's Pac-12 road matches will be shown on the Pac-12 Networks.
- USC improved to 60-12 all-time against California and has won seven straight over the Golden Bears.
- The Trojans moved to 159-34 all-time at Galen Center. USC is 8-2 at home this season.
- The Women of Troy finished with month of October with a 5-3 record.
