Undefeated USC Women Cash In 72-51 Win Over Nevada
November 25, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Cheyanne Wallace leads USC with a season-high 19 points and nine rebounds.
RENO, NEV. — The USC women's basketball team extended its perfect start to the season with another commanding victory, this one coming on the road with a 72-51 decision over Nevada, host of the Nugget Classic in Reno. USC improved to 6-0 in the win, which was highlighted by strong performances from Al-Tournament Team selections Mariya Moore and Cheyanne Wallace.
Wallace led the pack with 19 points and nine rebounds, going 2-for-2 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 from the stripe. Moore shouldered four fouls and yet still managed to finish with 12 points to go with seven assists and six rebounds. Also hitting double digits for the Trojan cause was Shalexxus Aaron, who drained three 3-pointers while finishing with 17 points and six rebounds. It was an uplifting effort for the Trojans, who had two top scorers sidelined with injury as Aliyah Mazyck and Minyon Moore were out for this one. USC finished up shooting 45.5 from the floor while outrebounding the Wolfpack 45-33. Nevada shot 30.2 percent from the floor, and was led by 14 points from Jade Redmon to go with 12 from Terae Briggs and 11 from Emma Torbert.
USC turned a four-point game into an 18-point halftime advantage as the Trojans turned up the heat on host Nevada in the second period. Cheyanne Wallace worked her way into double digits for the first time as a Trojan when she splashed a 3-pointer off a setup from fellow transfer Kayla Overbeck to carry USC along on an 8-0 run to lead it 32-20 with 4:00 left in the second frame. Nevada would break things up with a score at the other end, but USC got right back to business as Overbeck sparked another 8-0 run. Freshman Jillian Archer joined the scoresheet next with back-to-back buckets, and then Wallace added to her tally to craft a 40-22 USC lead at the break.
In the third, USC pressed onward, creating a little more space on the Wolfpack in that next stretch. Aaron scored six points in the frame, and also nabbed a steal that set USC off on a pretty fast break, with Moore hitting Wallace in stride for a fine finish that made it 50-29 Trojans. A trip to the line for Ja'Tavia Tapley resulted in two more points for the Trojan cause before the buzzer, and USC was up 54-32 entering the fourth. There, Nevada rallied early, but Wallace snapped that 6-0 surge with a 3-pointer. The Wolfpack would tug back, making it 57-43 before Moore buried a buzzer-beating three from deep to get USC a lift. Archer stepped back up for the Trojans next, netting two impressive buckets within 30 seconds of each other, and USC was well on its way to victory. Desiree Caldwell had the final word, knocking down two free throws to wrap up a 72-51 road win for the Women of Troy.
USC now returns home to host Fresno State in a Wednesday (Nov. 28) doubleheader with the USC men. The women face the Bulldogs at 5 p.m. that evening at Galen Center.
