November 07, 2018 | Women's Soccer, Features
LOS ANGELES – The Pac-12 Postseason Awards were released today and seven Trojans were honored, including Penelope Hocking, who was named the conference's Freshman of the Year, and Kaylie Collins, who was named the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year.
In addition to the individual honors, four Trojans were named to the All Pac-12 first team (Collins, Ally Prisock, Leah Pruitt, Savannah DeMelo), two to the second team (Hocking, Julia Bingham) and one to the third team (Tara McKeown).
Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year: Kaylie Collins
Collins led a USC defense that notched 13 shutouts on the season, the most in the Pac-12 and fourth most in program history. Her nine solo-shutouts were the most of any goalkeeper in the conference through the regular season and her 0.54 goals against average is second best in the league. Collins posted 54 saves during the regular season and an .848 save percentage. She helped USC allow just 10 goals all year, the second fewest of any team in the league. Her work in goal allowed the Trojans to post three long shutout streaks this year of 498, 441 and 432 minutes each.
The redshirt sophomore keeper's 16 career shutouts are already the fourth most in program history and her nine shutouts this year are tied for the fifth best single season total for USC. Collins was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team last year after posting seven shutouts in 19 games.
Pac-12 Freshman of the Year: Penelope Hocking
Hocking burst onto the scene as a true freshman, leading the team and the league with 13 goals this season. The freshman phenom also added six assists to lead the league with 32 total points. She posted 11 multi-point games this season and had a hat trick against Oregon and two goals against Oregon State in one week. She was also named to the All Pac-12 second team and Pac-12 All-Freshman team.
Hocking is the fourth player in program history to score at least 13 goals in the season and just the second freshman ever to do so. Her 32 total points are tied for the fourth most ever posted by a Trojan. Hocking came to USC as a highly touted recruit and made an immediate impact despite missing the first game of the year due to playing with the U.S. U-20 squad at this summer's World Cup in France.
All Pac-12 First Team: Ally Prisock, Leah Pruitt, Savannah DeMelo, Collins
Joining Collins on the All Pac-12 first team are a trio of seasoned leaders for the Trojans, including defensive stalwart Ally Prisock. Prisock, a MAC Hermann Award nominee, has been the leader of a USC defense that has led the Pac-12 with 13 shutouts through the regular season and finished second with a 0.51 goals against average. She has helped the Trojans allow just 165 shots all year and has also scored a goal and notched an assist. It is the second straight year Prisock has been named to the All Pac-12 first team.
Pruitt has been the Trojans' offensive catalyst all season, finishing second on the team and fifth in the conference with 11 goals this regular season. She also posted the second most assists on the Trojan squad and fourth most in the conference with eight helpers this year. Her 30 total points are tied for second in the Pac-12. She is the only player in the conference to finish in the top five in all three offensive categories this year. Pruitt was named to the All Pac-12 second team last year.
Savannah DeMelo has been the Trojans' leader in the midfield, pacing the team and finishing third in the conference with nine assists this year. The redshirt sophomore also added a career-high seven goals to sit 10th in the Pac-12 with 23 total points on the year. She, like Prisock, was named to the MAC Hermann Award watch list early in the year and is earning her second consecutive All Pac-12 first team recognition. DeMelo also missed the team's first game and much of the preseason while playing in the U-20 World Cup.
All Pac-12 Second Team: Julia Bingham, Hocking
Julia Bingham joined Hocking as one of two Trojans to earn All Pac-12 second team honors this season, giving the junior her first All Pac-12 recognition. Bingham earned Pac-12 All-Freshman team honors in 2016. As an outside back for the Trojans this year, Bingham gave the team a spark both offensively and defensively, helping the Trojans to the aforementioned 13 shutouts and 0.51 goals against average, while also posting three assists. Bingham started 18 games for the Trojans this year, losing just one contest to injury.
All Pac-12 Third Team: Tara McKeown
Another one of the Trojans' key players in the midfield who joined the team after her play with the U.S. U-20 World Cup team was done, McKeown finished fourth on the team in points with 14 through the regular season. The sophomore scored four goals for the second straight season and posted a career-high six assists this year. Her six assists were tied for 10th in the league through the regular season. McKeown started 17 games this year and played in a total of 18 for USC.
