No. 2 USC Delivers On Defense Again, Tallying Two Wins To Advance To Triton Invite Semis
February 10, 2018 | Women's Water Polo, Features
Trojans topped Sonoma State and San Diego State to move closer toward vying for a fifth straight title at the tourney.
LA JOLLA, CALIF. — The No. 2 USC women's water polo team continued its stingy defense through two decisive wins in group play at the Triton Invitational today. The Trojans shut out opponents in three full periods during each victory, tallying a 13-1 win over Sonoma State as goalie Victória Chamorro collected 14 saves and then notching a 14-2 victory over No. 18 San Diego State as Amanda Longan stepped in and gathered 12 saves in goal. The big offensive power of the day came from freshman Paige Hauschild, who delivered four goals in each game to help USC to a 5-0 mark on the year in securing a ticket to tomorrow's semifinal vs. UC Irvine at the tourney in La Jolla.
In the first clash of group play, USC had a morning matchup against Sonoma State and roared to a 13-0 lead before the Seawolves got on the board late in the fourth period. Senior goalie Chamorro was a force in the cage, amassing 14 saves while her Trojan teammates piled up goals on the other end. Freshman Paige Hauschild had her four goals in place by halftime, delivering a second-period hat trick to help USC craft a 9-0 lead at the break. Fellow freshman Nina Ceklic would tally a hat trick of her own as well, serving up her third during the third frame as USC worked ahead 12-0. Junior Courtney Fahey also had a multi-goal outing with a pair of blasts for the Trojan cause.
In game two, USC's defense shined once again. After San Diego State punched up two goals in the first frame, the Trojans pitched a shutout the rest of the way, silencing the Aztecs for the last 24 minutes of action. USC had built a 6-2 lead by the end of the first, with Hauschild, Denise Mammolito and Kelsey McIntosh scoring two goals apiece in that eight-minute span. En route to the final 14-2 win, two USC freshmen scored their first career goals as Trojans, with Randi Reinhardt delivering in the second period and Kari Jensen knocking one in in the third.
USC now turns to a semifinal matchup against UC Irvine tomorrow (Feb. 11) at 11:10 a.m. to fight for a spot in the 5:50 p.m. championship match. The Trojans have won the past four titles at the Triton Invitational and are looking to add a fifth to that string.
