No. 8 USC Falls To No. 1 Wake Forest In ITA National Indoor Quarterfinals
February 17, 2018 | Men's Tennis, Features
Trojans claim the doubles point, but the Demon Deacons fight back in singles in Seattle.
SEATTLE, WASH. — The No. 8 USC men's tennis team fought back to win the doubles point but did not have the firepower to fend off top-ranked Wake Forest in singles today as the Trojans took a 4-1 loss to the Demon Deacons in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. USC goes to 6-2 overall with the loss — the Trojans' second to a top-10 opponent this year. The Trojans will wrap their time in Seattle with another shot at taking out a top-10 foe in a 3:30 p.m. faceoff against No. 4 Georgia at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow (Feb. 18).
In today's quarterfinal bout with Wake Forest, the Demon Deacons made the first move with a 6-1 win on court two over USC's Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven. The Trojans were largely in control on courts one and three, though, and both were poised to tack up victories with brothers Riley Smith and Tanner Smith both serving for their respective match points. Court three's Daniel Cukierman and Tanner Smith got the 6-3 win first to level the doubles battle, leaving Brandon Holt and Riley Smith to come through with the clincher on a 6-4 victory that sealed a 1-0 start for the Trojans.
In singles, however, Wake Forest was able to outgun the Trojans. On court three, #22 Skander Mansouri topped USC's #119 Logan Smith 6-1, 6-1 to equalize things early. At the top spot, it was #100 Borna Gogo who managed a 6-3, 6-3 upset of USC's #11 sophomore Brandon Holt to make it a 2-1 Wake Forest advantage. Then, #6 Petros Chrysochos was able to deal USC freshman Daniel Cukierman his first loss of the year with a 6-4, 6-3 decision that put the Demon Deacons in position for the win, up 3-1. It would be #112 Bar Botzer who came through with the clincher, beating USC's Jack Jaede 7-5, 6-2 on court four to take the ticket to tomorrow's semifinals. That left two matches suspended with potential third sets on the horizon.
