No. 3 USC Surges To 17-1 Win Over San José State

Trojans start off with a 16-0 advantage to open action at Barbara Kalbus Invitational
IRVINE, CALIF. — The No. 3 USC women's water polo team rattled off the first 16 goals of the game to surge into the next round of group play at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. The Trojans' 17-1 win over No. 18 San José State today in Irvine secured advancement in group play, with USC facing Arizona State tomorrow (Feb. 24) at 11:45 a.m. A win there would put the Trojans into a 5:15 p.m. semifinal match.
Today in Irvine, the Trojans unleashed an 8-0 effort in the first eight minutes of action. Denise Mammolito had a hat trick in place by the close of that first frame. In the second period, Courtney Fahey, Kelsey McIntosh and Annika Jensen all punched in the second goals of the day to help USC craft a 12-0 lead by halftime. In the third, USC's defense remained stalwart in silencing the Spartans through that next stretch. On the offensive end, Paige Hauschild struck back-to-back goals to build on a hat trick for herself as USC worked ahead 15-0 entering the fourth period. There, Elise Stein delivered her second goal of the game to make it 16-0 Trojans before SJSU finally broke through with a goal at 6:30 in the fourth. One last Trojan goal would round things out, as USC's senior goalie Victória Chamorro closed out another powerful defensive stand by the Trojans with seven saves to her name.
