Hot Bats Again Propel Trojans to 12-6 Win Over Villanova
February 24, 2018 | Baseball, Features
Blake Sabol hit a grand slam in the first inning and Jamal O'Guinn had two doubles and a triple as the Trojans move to 5-1 on the year. Villanova falls to 3-2.
Sabol's shot in the first opened up the scoring early as USC would score all 12 runs in the first four innings. Chase Bushor added an RBI double as the Trojans went up 5-0 in the first. O'Guinn and Dillon Paulson each drove in runs in the second with doubles, and the freshman O'Guinn added a two-run triple in the fourth.
Quentin Longrie struck out a career-high nine batters in 5.0 innings of work to earn the win. Solomon Bates also tossed 3.0 innings of no-hit ball in relief. USC goes for the sweep tomorrow.
TOP PERFORMERS
- O'Guinn went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one triple, three RBI and one run scored.
- Sabol's grand slam was his first homer of the year and he also scored twice.
- Paulson was 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored, two RBI and one walk.
- Matthew Acosta went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
- Longrie tossed 5.0 innings, giving up seven hits and four runs. He struck out a career-best nine batters and walked just three.
- Bates gave up no hits, no runs and just one walk, while striking out three in 3.0 innings of work.
"We had been scoring a lot of runs lately, but not necessarily on a ton of hits," said Head Coach Dan Hubbs. "We started putting guys on base right away and then Blake had the big blast. We were putting multiple guys on base in multiple innings, and more often than not, that's going to lead to a win."
"Quentin was good for the most part, he struggled with command a few times, but was able to work out of some jams," said Hubbs. "Solomon came out of the pen and did a really nice job holding them at bay. That enabled us to again get a lot of guys in there to get some experience."
COMING UP
The Trojans wrap up their series with Villanova tomorrow at 1 p.m. and then play an exhibition against the NC Dinos of the Korean Baseball Association at Dedeaux Field on Monday, and host Loyola Marymount on Tuesday.
