March 02, 2018 | Men's Swimming & Diving, Features
Carter (200 Free), Vissering (100 Breast) eaach just miss firsts by less than a tenth of a second.
Senior Ralf Tribuntsov and freshman Robert Glinta joined Utah's Paul Ungur in a three-way tie for first in the 100y back while senior Dylan Carter (200y free) and junior Carsten Vissering (100y breast) were each within a tenth of a second from their own titles to highlight a big third night for USC at the 2018 Pac-12 Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday (March 2) in Federal Way, Wash.
USC remains third after three nights with 411.33 points. California leads with 677 followed by Stanford (544), USC, ASU (285), Arizona (259) and Utah (221.66).
Tribuntsov, the 2016 Pac-12 title winner in the 100y back and the top seed after prelims, tied Glinta and Ungur (close friends from Romania) for first in 45.52, sending all three to the top of the podium.
Tribuntsov was third halfway through the race (.087 off the pace) while Ungur sprinted to the lead with Glinta turning between the two. Ungur still led with 25 yards to go, but the charging Trojan pair met him at the wall for the first three-way first in Pac-12 Championships history.
The time was a PR for Glinta and his compatriot Ungur while 0.05 off of Tribuntsov's season-best from prelims.
Said Glinta: "It was awesome to tie with my best friend from my home country as well as my teammate and training partner."
Earlier in the night, Carter, in a bid for his first career Pac-12 title, finished second in the 200y free in 1:33.15, 0.06 back of ASU's Cameron Craig. He was second to Craig last year as well. It was Carter's ninth career Pac-12 A final.
Vissering followed with an attempt to defend his 2017 title in the 100y breast, but also just missed, taking second in the A final in 52.00, 0.09 back of Cal's Connor Hoppe, the 2016 winner. Sophomore Mario Koenigsperger, in his first career A final, finished eighth in 53.21. He went a PR 52.95 in prelims.
Tribuntsov, Vissering, Carter and senior Santo Condorelli finished the night of racing by taking second in the 400y medley relay in a season-best A cut of 3:04.95, 0.44 off their school record from last year and 1.04 back of Cal.
"It was a strong night for the Trojans," USC Coach Dave Salo said. "We came up a little short on some individual wins, but the three-way tie with Robert and Ralf was awesome. These guys are doing a great job racing and finishing off the evening with an A cut in the 400y medley relay sets us up well for NCAAs."
Condorelli missed the A final of the 100y fly in the morning, but came back with a vengeance tonight, winning the B final with a PR 45.36, 0.09 off of Carter's school record and a time that would have been second in the A final.
Junior Alex Valente was second in the B final in 46.02, matching his PR. Senior Kyle Grissom was third in the C final (47.05) of the 100y fly while junior Cash Deloache was fourth (47.07), both with PRs.
Freshman Jake Sannem also won a B final, taking the 200y free heat in a season-best 1:34.94. Junior Billy Monjay was a career-best seventh in the B final of the 100y breast (54.08, PR).
Sophomore Mark Jurek lowered his PR in the 400y IM to 3:46.52 en route to second in the B final of the race, becoming the ninth fastest Trojan in the event. Walker Bell took sixth in the heat in 3:51.31 after a PR 3:49.59 in prelims.
The meet closes Saturday with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
