No. 3 USC Tallies MPSF Road Win With 12-6 Victory At No. 6 ASU

Denise Mammolito’s first-half hat trick provides the spark for the Trojans in Tempe.
TEMPE, ARIZ. — The No. 3 USC women's water polo team kicked out to a winning start to MPSF action with a solid 12-6 road win at No. 6 Arizona State. Another well-balanced effort from the Trojans carried the visitors out ahead of the host Sun Devils with a three-goal surge to close the first half, and USC stayed the course in adding to its lead the rest of the way. The win improves the Trojans to 15-1 overall with a 1-0 mark in MPSF play.
USC had to play catch-up with ASU in the opening stretch, going goal-for-goal in the first period with strikes from Trojans Maud Megens, Annika Jensen and Denise Mammolito to keep pace for a 3-3 lockup after eight minutes of action. USC would strike first with another Mammolito blast off an assist from Kelsey McIntosh to edge USC ahead 4-3, only to have ASU equalize soon after. Again, Mammolito provided the spark for the Trojans, rifling in the go-ahead goal to initiate a three-goal rally from the Trojans. Her setup to Brianna Daboub helped USC to a 6-4 lead, and Jensen ripped in her second to lift USC to a 7-4 lead that held through to halftime.
USC's offense continued to click in the third, as Hayley McKelvey and Paige Hauschild both joined the scoresheet next. ASU answered with a single blast, but Courtney Fahey spun and struck for the Trojans to take USC to a 10-5 lead by the end of the third. That closed down Amanda Longan's time in the cage, with the junior goalie having collected eight saves. She'd give way to senior Victória Chamorro, who helped back up the Trojans' stingy defense in the fourth. ASU got one to go late late in the period, but not before Nina Ceklic hammered home back-to-back goals for the Trojan cause to help build to that final 12-6 USC victory.
The Trojans now return home to Uytengsu Aquatics Center to wrap their week's work with a clash against Pacific tomorrow (March 25) at 1 p.m.
