Armenta's Late Blast Powers USC Past Washington, 1-0
March 29, 2018 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – Angelo Armenta hit a solo-home run in the bottom of the eighth inning and the USC pitching staff did the rest in a 1-0 win over Washington on Thursday night.
The Trojans got 7.0 scoreless innings from Kyle Hurt and Armenta's first homer of the year was all the offense necessary as USC moves to 13-9 overall and 3-4 in Pac-12 play. Washington falls to 11-11 overall and 4-3 in conference action.
Hurt matched his career high with eight strikeouts on the day and retired the final eight batters he faced before exiting after the seventh inning. Brian Gursky came in to toss a perfect eighth and Connor Lunn picked up his eighth save of the year, stranding runners on first and third in the process. Gursky picked up the win to move to 2-0. Washington got runners past first just three times in the game against the Trojan pitching staff. USC walked only three batters on the day.
Armenta led off the eighth with a homer to right that left the yard in a hurry. USC would get runners on the corners in the inning, but couldn't add any insurance runs for Lunn.

QUOTABLE
"Runs were hard to come by today, but I thought Kyle did a great job with seven scoreless innings," said Head Coach Dan Hubbs. "Gursky and Lunn came in and each put up zeros, and then Angelo obviously had the huge swing. I thought Kyle made a big pitch with a guy on third and one out in the third inning and we threw a guy out at the plate in that inning as well, which was a huge moment. Murphy made two great plays, one on a high pop-up where makes a catch flying backgrounds, and then he made a hall of fame catch coming out on a bunt on a dive. That play really helped hold them in an inning that could have turned into something. Obviously the story of the game is Kyle and then Angelo, but I think it was a team effort and I'm proud of the way the guys battled."
"I was just trying to hunt the fastball, stay inside it and just put a good swing on it," said Armenta of his eighth-inning homer. "I got a fastball and was able to take it out. It felt pretty good when I hit it. I thought the pitching was huge today. Kyle shutting them down, I mean he has been pitching well all year, and then for Connor to come in and close the door, it was big."
