No. 3 USC Goes Big For 21-9 Win Over No. 12 Hartwick
March 31, 2018 | Women's Water Polo, Features
Trojans score a season-high 21 goals with Paige Hauschild delivering seven for USC.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 3 USC women's water polo team churned out a season-high 21 goals behind a career-high seven goals from Paige Hauschild to register a 21-9 win over visiting No. 12 Hartwick today at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. USC had nine Trojans score and three goalies record saves in the well-balanced victory for the hosts. USC improves to 17-1 overall with today's win.
Hauschild's seven-goal outburst comes less than a week after teammate Maud Megens did the same in another decisive Trojan victory over Pacific last weekend. Seven goals is the third more scored in a single game by a Trojan, with the record standing at nine goals.
The Trojans peeled out to a 5-0 start, with Kelsey McIntosh scoring twice in that surge en route to an eventual hat trick on the day. Brianna Daboub's first of a final four goals also came during that Trojan rally, which came to a close with a 6-on-5 score from Hartwick's Zsofia Polak, who would finish up with four goals for the Hawks today. USC would rattle off five more goals before the close of the first period, as Daboub drilled two more to make it a first-frame hat trick for the senior captain. Maud Megens, Verica Bakoc and Denise Mammolito would also join the scoresheet in the first to help make it a 10-2 USC lead after just eight minutes of action.
The Trojans' scoring frenzy would cool down in the next stretch, but USC would continue to build on its lead. Daboub knocked in her fourth with a ripper out of set, and McIntosh delivered her third while USC worked out to a 14-5 lead by halftime. USC goalies Amanda Longan and Victória Chamorro split time in the first half, but Longan stepped back in for the third quarter before giving way to senior Nicola Gonzales for the final three minutes of the fourth. Offensively in the second half, Hauschild hammered home four more goals to work her way to seven on the day while Hayley McKelvey, Elise Stein and Courtney Fahey added to the scoring onslaught for the Trojans as they wrapped up a final 21-9 win over the Hawks.
For the Trojans' next action, USC will host California in a crucial MPSF battle that will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks on Saturday (April 7). But that 5 p.m. clash isn't the only big event at Uytengsu Aquatics Center that day. In the morning, USC's hosts the 38th annual Swim With Mike event, an annual fundraiser supporting physically challenged athletes around the country. In almost 40 years of existences, Swim With Mike has raised over $20 million in scholarships to help recipients overcome their tragedies and realize their dreams. In conjunction with the Swim With Mike activities, USC hosts the first-ever Masters water polo game for any and all 18-and-over players registered to compete. To get in the game, registration is free at uscwaterpolo.com. For more information on USC's Swim With Mike event and to donate to the campaign, go to www.swimwithmike.org/campaigns/usc/.
