No. 12 USC Men Score Seventh Straight Pac-12 Semifinal Slot
April 26, 2018 | Men's Tennis, Features
Trojans top the Sun Devils 4-0 in the quarterfinals in Ojai tonight.
OJAI, CALIF. — The No. 12 USC men's tennis team sped to a swift quarterfinal win to open the Trojans' run at the 2018 Pac-12 Tournament, with the defending champs posting a 4-0 sweep of No. 36 Arizona State to secure USC's seventh straight trip to the semis. Freshman Daniel Cukierman followed up wins from redshirt sophomore Jake DeVine and sophomore Brandon Holt to issue the clincher in this one, sending USC along to a rematch against Stanford in tomorrow's semifinals. Now 16-7 overall, USC will face the Cardinal at 4 p.m. in a semi that will be televised live from Ojai on Pac-12 Networks.
USC got a leg up in doubles action with Daniel Cukierman and Tanner Smith's swift 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot over ASU's Hannestad/Kirkman. With a tighter match going on on court one, USC's No. 2 pair of Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven — gripping a career-best #7 national ranking — topped ASU's Bolla/Rakotomalala with a 6-2 win to pocket the first point of the night for the Trojans, suspending #9 Brandon Holt and Riley Smith's match on court one.
In singles, Jake DeVine hit the gas and hauled in a speedy 6-3, 6-0 win over ASU's Kirkman on court six to tug the Trojans ahead 2-0. USC captured five first sets in singles play, and it was #11 Brandon Holt who hit the finish line next with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Geerts at the No. 2 spot. That set up #82 Daniel Cukierman for the clincher, and the freshman came through with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court two to secure victory for his Trojans with the victory over Hannestad. Cukierman's clinching win suspended action on the remaining courts and punched the Trojans' ticket to tomorrow's semifinal against Stanford.
The Trojans and Cardinal will square off at 4 p.m. tomorrow (April 27) at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif. Live scores will be available at http://pac-12.com/tennis/championships-2018/scores and the match will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
