Trojans Fall 2-1 in Extra Innings at Oregon
April 29, 2018 | Baseball, Features
EUGENE, Ore. – The USC baseball team rallied in the ninth to force extra innings, but Ray Soderman hit a walk-off RBI double to win it for Oregon, 2-1, in the bottom of the 10th inning on Sunday.
Matthew Acosta drove in the game-tying run in the ninth after Lars Nootbaar singled earlier in the inning off of Ducks closer Ryne Nelson. The comeback wasn't to be, however, as USC left the bases loaded in the ninth.
The Trojans fall to 19-21 on the year and 7-14 in Pac-12 play, while Oregon moves to 21-20 overall and 8-13 in conference action.
The Trojan arms did a fantastic job to keep USC in the game until the end, with Solomon Bates tossing 6.0 strong frames and Connor Lunn pitching the final 3.1 innings. Bates gave up a run in the first, but settled in to hold Oregon scoreless the rest of the way. Lunn then came in and held down the Ducks until USC could finally find its first run of the day in the ninth.
Nootbaar smacked a one-out single in the top of the ninth and then Stephen Dubb hit a two-out single up the middle to put runners on the corners. Acosta would guide a single into left field on the first pitch he saw to tie the game.
After Lunn got a strikeout to end the ninth and force extras, the Ducks came back in the bottom of the 10th to put a runner on with a hit-by-pitch and then score on Soderman's double down the right-field line.
