Three-Time Champion USC Beach Receives Fifth Seed in 2018 NCAA Tournament

The three-time national champion Women of Troy will meet Florida State in their first match at the 2018 NCAA Championship
INDIANAPOLIS – The three-time defending national champion USC beach volleyball team (25-12) will defend its back-to-back NCAA titles as the fifth seed, the NCAA Selection Committee announced on Sunday, April 29.

The Women of Troy were chosen as one of two at-large selections by the committee and will face fourth-seeded Florida State (30-6) in the first round at 10 a.m. CT on Friday, May 4, in Gulf Shores, Ala. The Seminoles won the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association championship. The USC-FSU dual will be shown live on ESPNU with individual court coverage on the ESPN+ and ESPN3 digital platform. USC and Florida State met twice in the inaugural NCAA tournament in 2016.

Pac-12 champion and top-ranked UCLA (35-3) received the No. 1 overall seed and will face Florida International (22-10) in the tournament's first dual at 9 a.m. CT. West Coast Conference champion Pepperdine (24-3) was named the No. 2 seed and faces No. 7-seed Louisiana State (26-12) in the 11 a.m. dual. Third-seeded Big West Champion Hawai'i (35-3) will take on sixth-seeded South Carolina (24-7) in the noon match.Â

USC has won each of the last three national championships in collegiate beach volleyball including the final title awarded by the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) in 2015 and each of the first two NCAA championships (2016-17). The Trojans have also won 12 consecutive duals on Gulf Shores' sand beginning with the 2015 championship run. Pepperdine owns two national titles (2012 and 2014 AVCA) and Long Beach State claimed the only other championship in 2013.

All eight of Friday's duals will be carried on ESPNU. Saturday matches will be shown on ESPN2. Sunday's contender's bracket dual will also air on ESPN2 before the title match at 1 p.m., set for broadcast on ESPN.
