USC’s Desiree Caldwell Selected To USA U18 National Team
June 13, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Incoming Trojan will compete for Team USA at the FIBA Americas U18 Championships.
USC incoming freshman guard Desiree Caldwell will take a detour to Mexico before checking in for duty at Troy. The Texas product has been selected to the USA Basketball U18 National Team, which is set to compete at the 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championship from Aug. 1-7 in Mexico City.
"We are very excited and very happy that Desi has earned this opportunity to represent USA basketball," USC head coach Mark Trakh said of Caldwell's selection to the U18 roster. "This will be a great experience for Desi, and all of Trojan Nation is behind her! Congratulations, Desi!"
Caldwell already has a bronze medal with Team USA, earned as a member of the 2015 U16 National Team at the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championship. Now, she'll have a chance to add to her international accolades playing for her country, joining a line of USA U18 teams that have claimed gold at the FIBA Americas event the past eight years. Caldwell competed at the U18 trials in Colorado Springs last month and now will join her fellow Team USA roster-mates for training camp on July 20 to prep for the trip to Mexico. In addition to seeking a ninth straight gold medal, the U18 squad will also aim for qualification for next summer's 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup, which will include the top four finishers at the FIBA Americas event.
In making the U18 roster, Caldwell is tracing the footsteps of six other past and present Trojans who made the cut for past USA U18 FIBA Americas Championship teams — Ebony Hoffman (2000), Stefanie Gilbreath (2006), Ashley Corral (2008), Cassie Harberts (2010), Mariya Moore (2014) and Valerie Higgins (2016).
Caldwell is one of four USC newcomers joining the Trojan roster for this coming 2018-19 season. A 5-6 guard out of Byron P. Steele II High School, Caldwell hails from San Antonio, Texas, where she averaged 19.0 points, 8.0 assists and 5.0 steals per game in high school. Caldwell joins fellow freshman Jillian Archer and transfers Kayla Overbeck and Cheyanne Wallace as the newest Women of Troy.
