Caldwell Gets Gold With Team USA
August 09, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Incoming freshman Desiree Caldwell wins gold at the FIBA Americas U18 Championships.
USC incoming freshman guard Desiree Caldwell will have a gold medal to add to her packing list when the Texas native loads up to make the move to Los Angeles this month. As a member of the USA Basketball U18 National Team, Caldwell and her Team USA teammates won it all at the 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Mexico City. It's the ninth consecutive gold won by the USA at the event, and punches a ticket to next summer's 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup.
For Caldwell, the gold medal goes along with a bronze claimed as a member of the USA U16 Team at the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championship. At this year's U18 event, Caldwell played in all six games and started one for the 6-0 USA squad, contributing 17 points that included a perfect 5-for-5 effort from the free-throw line. Caldwell also had 21 rebounds, 10 steals and eight assists during the tourney. USA's run to the top of the podium was field by decisive wins over Argentina, Chile, Puerto Rico in the preliminary rounds. The Americans would top El Salvador 87-27 in the quarterfinals and bear Colombia 83-47 in the semifinals to earn its place in the final versus Canada. There, USA grabbed the gold with an 84-60 victory over the Canadians.Â
Caldwell's selection to the USA U18 roster makes her the seventh Trojan to compete for the USA at the U18 FIBA Americas Championship — Ebony Hoffman (2000), Stefanie Gilbreath (2006), Ashley Corral (2008), Cassie Harberts (2010), Mariya Moore (2014) and Valerie Higgins (2016).
Caldwell is one of four USC newcomers joining the Trojan roster for this coming 2018-19 season. A 5-6 guard out of Byron P. Steele II High School, Caldwell hails from Cibolo, Texas, where she averaged 19.0 points, 8.0 assists and 5.0 steals per game in high school. Caldwell joins fellow freshman Jillian Archer and transfers Kayla Overbeck and Cheyanne Wallace as the newest Women of Troy.
