The Women of Troy added two new assistant coaches ahead of the 2019 season
LOS ANGELES – The USC lacrosse program has hired Katie Hertsch and Deemer Class as assistant coaches, head coach Lindsey Munday announced on Monday, Sept. 10. The two new assistants join the Trojans in advance of 2019, the team's seventh season.
"I am thrilled to welcome Katie and Deemer to our staff," said Munday. "They each bring a wealth of experience that will benefit our program tremendously. I have had the opportunity to play with Katie on Team USA and know her passion and determination first hand. I am excited for her to bring that to our defensive unit. Deemer has had success in both college and beyond. He brings a new perspective that will help our offense get to the next level. I am so happy to welcome them to the Trojan Lacrosse Family."
Hertsch was a member of the United States National Team from 2010-15, a 2016 United Women's Lacrosse (UWLX) All-Star, and helped the New England Command win the 2018 Women's Pro Lacrosse League (WPLL) championship.
An accomplished player on the field, Hertsch earned her All-Star accolades as a member of the Philadelphia Force of UWLX and was a standout at Hofstra where she ranks among the top 10 in career ground balls, caused turnovers, and draw controls.
Previously, Hertsch served as an assistant coach at Rutgers for five seasons (2014-18) and had stints as an assistant coach at Hofstra (2013) and Boston University (2012).
Hertsch played with Team USA as a member of the 38-player 2014-15 U.S. Women's National Team roster. She was first named to the U.S. National Team in 2010 and helped lead Team USA to a gold medal at the 2013 FIL World Cup title in Oshawa, Canada. In addition to playing for Team USA, Hertsch also served as a clinic instructor as a representative of the squad.
As the defensive assistant coach at Hofstra, Hertsch's influence was clear as the team finished in the top of the Colonial Athletic Association in several defensive categories and advanced to the league's championship game in 2013. Hertsch also spent a year in Boston as an assistant coach for the BU women's lacrosse program. In one season with the Terriers, Hertsch helped the squad to an 11-6 record as they captured the America East's 2012 regular-season crown.
Hertsch is heralded as one of the top defenders to ever suit up at Hofstra. In three years on Long Island, the former captain amassed 138 ground balls, 70 caused turnovers, and 110 draw controls. Those totals ranked in the top-10 all-time of each respective category. A two-time All-Mid-Atlantic Region team selection, Hertsch also garnered All-Colonial Athletic Association accolades as a junior and senior and was twice named to the IWLCA Academic Squad. Hertsch graduated cum laude from Hofstra in 2011 with a bachelor of science in physical education.
One of the most accomplished NCAA men's lacrosse players in the history of the sport, Class now begins his coaching career. As a member of the Duke men's lacrosse program, Class won two NCAA championships (2013 and 2014) and was a three-time IWLCA All-American. He was a three-time All-ACC selection and captained the Blue Devils in 2016.
Class holds the Duke midfielder single-season record for goals (50) and is one of just six men's lacrosse midfielders in NCAA history to score that many goals in a season. He finished his collegiate career with 201 points to rank fifth among Duke midfielders; 12th all-time for the Blue Devils. His 134 career-goals were ranked tied for ninth in Duke history.
Class was named to the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-American at-large third team. He was also a 2016 USILA Academic All-American and was a four-time choice for the All-ACC Academic Team and the ACC's Academic Honor Roll.
After his collegiate career, Class was selected by the Atlanta Blaze of Major League Lacrosse in the second round of the 2016 draft. As a rookie, he played in six games and recorded 13 points and seven ground balls. Trades took Class to the Charlotte Hounds, the Chesapeake Bayhawks, and back to the Blaze. In 2018, he set a franchise record and led the MLL in two-point goals with five. He scored 30 points to rank second on the team.
Class is a co-founder of RBDC Lacrosse, a venture started with his business partner Ryan Brown. RBDC conducts clinics, small group training, private training, and remote coaching with a focus on the art of shooting.
Class graduated from Duke with a bachelor of science in sociology in 2016 and was named one of the Blue Devils' two ACC Senior Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
USC finished the 2018 season with a 10-8 overall record and advanced to the semifinals of the inaugural Pac-12 tournament where it fell to champion Stanford in a narrow 15-14 defeat. The Women of Troy were 6-4 to finish third in the league's regular-season standings. Head coach Lindsey Munday improved to 79-38 (.675) through the 2018 season and midfielder Kerrigan Miller capped her sophomore season as the Pac-12's Midfielder of the Year and received IWLCA All-America third-team honors.
