No. 1 USC Goes To 6-0 With Big Wins At UCSB Winter Invitational
January 20, 2019 | Women's Water Polo, Features
Two more well-rounded victories from the Trojans.
SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC women's water polo team got extra defensive on the final day of action at the UCSB Winter Invitational, allowing a total of just five goals across two more Trojan victories at the event in Santa Barbara, Calif. Offense once more was spread fairly evenly among Trojan hands, while goalies Amanda Longan and Holly Parker combined forces in the cage. Longan grabbed 20 saves in a game and a half of action, while Parker pitched a shut out in her second half of play. By the end of the day, USC had upended No. 15 UC San Diego 13-4 and topped No. 13 Indiana 11-1 to go to 6-0 overall.
In the morning matchup with the Tritons, USC tacked up a 6-1 advantage in the first frame with goals from six different Trojans. USC would lead it 9-1 at the break, and then Paige Hauschild joined the scoresheet with back-to-back blasts to work her way to a hat trick before Kelsey McIntosh delivered her second goal of the game in helping USC along to a 12-3 lead entering the fourth. There, Maud Megens struck her second, and USC would finish out with a 13-4 win. Longan hauled in 14 saves for the Trojan cause in that one for her third double-digit outing of the event.
In the afternoon, USC faced off against its newest MPSF-mate in No. 13 Indiana. The nonconference bout saw the Trojans peel out to a 7-0 lead, with McIntosh and freshman Grace Tehaney each scoring twice in the surge. Indiana would get one to go in the first half, and USC led it 8-1 at halftime thanks to six saves tallied by Longan. She'd give way to Parker for the second half, and the redshirt sophomore also made six saves while silencing the Hoosiers through those two frames. Elise Stein knocked in her second of the game during the third, and Kaylee Brownsberger and Randi Reinhardt also found the back of the net in the fourth to wrap up an 11-1 USC victory.
The Trojans will next head to the CBU Mini Invitational next weekend, facing two teams on Jan. 26 in Riverside. USC will face Concordia at 12:45 p.m. and turn immediately to take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 2 p.m. that Saturday afternoon.
