Mariya Moore Has Career Outing, But USC Women Fall To No. 18 Cal In Berkeley
January 06, 2019 | Women's Basketball, Features
Senior scores 36 points and lands seven 3-pointers for the Trojan cause.
BERKELEY, CALIF. — A career outing from USC senior Mariya Moore was almost enough to knock off host California, but the No. 18 Golden Bears got the buckets they needed to keep the visiting Trojans at bay in a 66-59 Cal victory in Berkeley. Moore delivered the most points by a Trojan since 1990 with her career-high 36-point effort, and tied the school record with seven 3-pointers landed in the game. USC goes to 10-4 overall and to 0-3 in Pac-12 play with the loss, while Cal improves to 10-3, 1-1.
USC's Mariya Moore was leading all scorers with 18 points at halftime, while Cal's Kristine Anigwe had a double-double in the books by the break as the Golden Bears led it 36-29 after 20 minutes of action. Cal was shooting 46.4 from the floor and had netted five 3-pointers by halftime to outpace USC's 42.3 percent and four 3-pointers nailed. After leading by as much as 18 in the third, Cal would grip a double-digit lead during the fourth before USC carved it down to single digits with a strong fourth frame. The Golden Bears saw the Trojans get to within four after five straight points from Moore pulled it to a 63-49 margin in the final minute, but USC would see its next attempts rattle out as Cal held on for the win.
By the final buzzer, Mariya Moore led all scorers with her career-high 36 points after going 7-of-14 from 3-point range for the Trojans. With five assists, Minyon Moore cracked the top-10 in career assists at USC, now with 368 to her name to rank No. 10 all-time at USC. Cal was paced by Anigwe's double-double with 21 points and 16 rebounds, while Asha Thomas added 12 points for the Bears.
Mariya Moore was the machine for the Trojans in the first half, scoring over half USC's points with 18 by the break. After converting the and-one off an assist from sister Minyon, Mariya had the game knotted up 18-18 early in the second quarter. Cal responded with a 7-0 surge, but five minutes later Moore had things snarled up again in draining a long 3-pointer to make it 29-29 entering the last two minutes of the first half. Again, Cal manufactured a surge, and USC would trail its hosts 36-29 at halftime.
After Cal ballooned its lead to 51-33 with 3:15 on the clock in the third, Minyon Moore hit sister Mariya for another three, and Mariya would score again soon after to get USC a boost. Can fired back, however, and the Bears carried a 55-40 lead into the fourth. Mariya Moore was undeterred, hitting back-to-back threes around a single score from Cal, and then Ja'Tavia Tapley cut the margin down to single digits with a score in the paint. Minyon struck next, and USC was within seven, down 57-50 with 6:20 to go. Kayla Overbeck delivered later, and USC was still within seven entering the final 3:45. Mariya kept coming, finishing off a three-point play and then scoring again to get USC within four, down 63-59 with 37 seconds left. Once again, a late USC rally would see the Trojans run out of time, while Cal struck from the stripe to close out the final 66-59 decision in Berkeley.
USC now heads back to Los Angeles to continue its stretch of bouts against ranked foes. USC hosts Oregon at 8 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 11) and then takes on Oregon State at 12 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 13) at Galen Center.
