USC Women Beat Virginia In Home Opener
November 09, 2019 | Women's Basketball, Features
Women of Troy honor the great Tina Thompson in pregame ceremony at Galen Center.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team welcomed back Trojan great Tina Thompson today at Galen Center, holding a jersey retirement ceremony to honor her incredible career. With former USC head coach Fred Williams presenting her framed jersey, the Women of Troy and USC fans were able to celebrate Thompson's outstanding accomplishments in the sport. Minutes later, however, it was down to business. As head coach of Virginia, Thompson set up camp on the opposing bench and proceeded to go toe-to-toe with her alma mater. It was true battle in the first half, but the Trojans found some momentum in the second half and pressed on to a 59-49 victory over the visiting Cavaliers. The win improves USC to 2-0 on the year, while Virginia goes to 1-1.
USC shot 30.6 percent from the floor and held Virginia to just 26 percent at the other end. Virginia won out on the board 50-47, but USC pinned up a whopping 13 blocks — second most in program history — led by Stephanie Watts' five stuffs. She'd lead the Trojans with a double double on 14 points and 12 rebounds, with Desiree Caldwell scoring 11 and Endyia Rogers adding 10. Lisa Jablonowski led Virginia with 13 points and nine rebounds, with Jocelyn Willoughby scoring 10. Teams were even with 10 turnovers apiece.
NOTEABLE:
- SR G Stephanie Watts recorded her first double-double as a Trojan (14 points, 12 rebounds)
- FR C Angel Jackson scored nine straight points for the Trojans in the fourth quarter to help USC to its largest lead at 54-42 with 3:39 to go
- SR G Aliyah Jeune scored her first points as a Trojan with a 3-pointer landed at 1:02 in the third
- USC's 13 blocks is the second most in program history. USC recorded 18 vs. Pepperdine in 1984.
- All eight active USC newcomers have now scored as Trojans
