Justin Suh Fires Pair Of 68s To Lead USC To 36-Hole Lead At Southwestern Invitational

The senior is one back of lead, Kaito Onishi tied for fifth.
Senior Justin Suh turned in a pair of 68s while sophomore Kaito Onishi joined him under par to lead the No. 3 USC men's golf team into first place after a nearly completed 36-hole first day of the Southwestern Invitational at the North Ranch C.C. on Monday (Feb. 25).
The Trojans, looking for their third win of the season, combined for a two-round 7-under 569 (284-285), five strokes better than second-place UCLA. Half of the 12-team field did not complete two rounds due to darkness and will finish their remaining holes Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. with the third round to follow.
Suh, who entered the day leading USC with a stroke average of 68.93, lowered it further after posting a two-round 8-under 136 (68-68), one back of Pepperdine's Clay Feagler. Suh birdied five holes against one bogey in both rounds, including the par 5 15th hole twice.
Riding a streak of five straight top 15 finishes that includes three in the top 4, Suh now has a team-best 11 rounds in the 60s and has been par or better in 15 of 17 rounds.
Onishi is tied for fifth at 3-under 141 (69-72). He had six birdies during his 3-under first round and closed the second with birdies on 17 and 18 to finish that round at par.
Sophomore Issei Tanabe is tied for 17th at 2-over 146 (72-74) while junior Kyle Suppa (76-72) and senior Sam Kim (75-73) are tied for 25th at 4-over.
Freshman Charlie Reiter, playing individually, carded a 4-over 76 in the first round and is 1-under through 15 in the second round.
