No. 1 USC Storms Into Triton Invite Semis
February 09, 2019 | Women's Water Polo, Features
Trojans are looking for their sixth straight title at the tourney.
LA JOLLA, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC women's water polo team made it a 10-0 start to 2019 to add on to the 16-game win streak with which it closed down last season after a winning opening day at the Triton Invitational. Winners of the last five Triton titles, the Trojans head into tomorrow's semifinals to try to get in position for a sixth straight crown at the La Jolla event. Today, USC took down Pomona-Pitzer 15-4 before at 16-5 win over No. 13 LMU.
USC opened the day with a first-half shutout of Pomona-Pitzer, mounting a 12-0 lead on the Sagehens while Amanda Longan cleaned house in the cage. In the first frame, Kelsey McIntosh struck twice while four other Trojans piled on a goal apiece to make it 6-0 Trojans after eight minutes of action. Next, Maud Megens and Paige Hauschild each pumped in their second goals of the morning, while freshmen Mireia Guiral, Alejandra Aznar and Grace Tehaney also got to the back of the net, with another goal coming from sophomore Sabrina Garabet, and USC was up 12-0 by halftime. Holly Parker checked into the cage for the second half, and USC kept well out ahead of the Sagehens down the stretch. After a blast from Tilly Kearns, Kaylee Brownsberger wrapped the USC scoring with back-to-back goals — one to close the third and one more in the fourth — to make it a final 15-4 USC victory.
That put the Trojans on to the winners circle in group play, up against the winner of the other morning group match between LMU and Long Beach State in an afternoon tangle that would decide the ticket to tomorrow's semifinals. USC jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the Lions in this one, with Megens punching in a pair to give USC the early lift. A blast from Verica Bakoc wrapped the first frame with USC up 4-1, and then the Trojan freshmen got in on the action in the second. Bayley Weber, Alejandra Aznar and Grace Tehaney bulked up USC's advantage to 7-1 before Elise Stein added one of her own to make it 8-1 before the Lions struck late to make it 8-2 at halftime. In the third, USC poured on five more goals while rendering the Lions silent to balloon the Trojan lead to 13-2 entering the fourth. In the fourth, Parker took over the cage and USC spread the wealth among two more scorers, with Sophia Lucas tallying one and Garabet adding two to help round out a final 16-5 Trojan win.
USC now turns to tomorrow's semifinals, where the Trojans will meet either No. 8 Michigan or No. 9 Arizona State at 11:10 a.m. in La Jolla for the right to play in tomorrow night's championship bout.
