Aliyah Mazyck Hits 30 As USC Women Beat The Buffs 85-77
March 01, 2019 | Women's Basketball, Features
USC gets a key Pac-12 win at Galen Center to improve to 16-12 overall.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team avenged a road loss in style tonight, beating visiting Colorado 84-77 with another high-octane offensive performance. Just a game ahead of Senior Day, senior Aliyah Mazyck set a new career high for herself with 30 points to help pace the Trojans to a solid team victory tonight at Galen Center. USC improves to 16-12 overall and to 6-11 in Pac-12 play, while Colorado goes to 12-16, 2-15 with one regular-season game remaining.
The teams were going shot-for-shot from 3-point range until USC had Shalexxus Aaron drain back-to-back threes for the Trojan cause to help carry USC along on a 10-0 run to wrap the first half. USC had shot 6-of-11 from 3-point land in the first half to help the Trojans go 46.9 percent overall from the floor in the first 20 minutes to build a 39-30 lead by halftime. Colorado had shot 40 percent from the floor, but had managed only nine points in the second quarter to a 22-point outburst by the Trojans as the hosts took the lead. The teams stayed largely in stride the rest of the way, each knocking down big shots while the Trojans managed to remain just out of reach. By the final buzzer, USC had shot 43.3 percent from the floor and landed nine 3-pointers, while Colorado was at 40.8 percent and also nailed nine threes. The Trojans were more successful in getting to the line in this one, going 23-of-37 to Colorado's 16-of-19 free-throw outing. The Buffs won out on the boards 45-35, but USC forced 15 Colorado turnovers while committing just nine of its own.
USC received a game-high and career-high 30 points from senior Aliyah Mazyck, who also nailed five 3-pointers in the Trojan victory. Minyon Moore added 18 points — 12 from the free-throw line — and led on the boards with seven rebounds while tallying five assists and five steals. USC also had Desiree Caldwell and Ja'Tavia Tapley hit double digits with 10 points apiece. Colorado was paced by Mya Hollingshed's 20 points, and received 18 from Kennedy Leonard, 16 from Quinessa Caylao-Do and 11 from Emma Clarke.
The Trojans were stuck playing catchup for the opening stretch, pulling even with the Buffs three times in the first quarter but seeing Colorado respond with a go-ahead bucket every time. The shootout continued as the teams matched each other from beyond the arc, but it was USC's fourth three that finally tugged the Trojans into the lead for the first time. The breakthrough bucket would come from freshman Desiree Caldwell, who planted a baseline three to make it 25-24 Trojans with 7:45 on the clock in the second quarter. As the theme was set, Colorado fired back with a three of its own to go back on top, but the USC defense did its job next and Caldwell and Ja'Tavia Tapley each finished off USC fast breaks to get USC up 29-27 at 6:10. The Buffs edged back ahead soon after, only to see the Trojans find a spark. Minyon Moore got USC back on top, and then Shalexxus buried back-to-back threes for a 37-30 lead entering the final minute of the half. Mazyck would have the last look of the half, and her looping shot in the lane got a friendly bounce and dropped through to beat the buzzer and give USC a 39-30 lead at the break.
As the third frame unfurled, the Trojans were able to pad out their lead to double digits as Kayla Overbeck found her scoring touch and finished off back-to-back buckets in the paint to balloon USC ahead 47-35 at 6:45. Later, Mazyck would account for seven straight points for the Trojans — wrapped around a three by the Buffs — and USC was up 54-41 with 4:37 on the clock. As it turned out, that 3-pointer would be the last field goal hit by the Trojans in the third, as the remaining points came from the free-throw line while Colorado was able to carve into the USC lead a bit, rounding out the third with the Trojans up 58-50. In the fourth, USC manufactured a 7-0 surge to pad back its lead, with Tapley and Mazyck churning out points to craft a 67-54 USC lead with 5:30 to go. The margin was tugged back to singles digits with scores from Buffs, who got to within seven, down 74-67 with 1:25 remaining. A trip to the line by the Buffs got it to 74-69 at 1:11. After a single free throw fell for USC, Tapley hauled in a clutch defensive rebound, and Minyon Moore went back to the line and hit the back end again, making it 76-69 with 58 ticks to go. After a string of USC free throws, CU landed a 3-pointer to make it 79-72 with 25 seconds left, but USC stayed the course as Moore worked her way to No. 6 all-time in career free throws made with 10 more dropped on the night and Mazyck got the bucket she needed to set a new career-high for herself with 30 points. Moore's last two free throws would top off the final 84-77 USC win.
The Trojans now turn to wrap the regular season with a finale against Utah at 12 p.m. on Sunday (March 3) at Galen Center. Before the game, USC will honor its four seniors — Marguerite Effa, Aliyah Mazyck, Mariya Moore and Cheyanne Wallace — in a Senior Day ceremony.
