Head coach Anna Collier registers her 200th-career victory on USC’s 11th straight win
LOS ANGELES – The second-seeded USC beach volleyball team (27-4) extended its winning streak to a season-long 11 duals on a 3-2 victory over top-seeded and No. 1-ranked UCLA (30-2) at Merle Norman Stadium on Friday, April 26, in the Pac-12 Championship winner's final. The win is eighth-year head coach Anna Collier's 200th-career-victory.
The Trojans improved to 11-8 all-time against UCLA and have now split the four meetings this season. The win is also USC's 10th at home in 2019 and pushes the Trojans to 14-3 in Pac-12 tournament matches; 7-0 when those matches are played on home sand. USC will appear in its fourth consecutive Pac-12 championship dual.
UCLA scored the first point of the dual with a win at the No. 5 position. There, Izzy Carey and Lindsey Sparks claimed a 21-15, 21-10 win over junior Cammie Dorn and Mollie Ebertin. The Trojans equalized with a win at the No. 4 spot when junior Joy Dennis and sophomore Maja Kaiser logged a 21-16, 21-15 win over Lea Monkhouse and Savvy Simo for their eighth straight victory.
The Bruins scored a second point with their win at the second court. Lily Justine and Sarah Sponcil snapped an eight-match winning streak held by senior Terese Cannon and sophomore Sammy Slater with their 21-19, 21-17 win. Only moments later, USC's No. 3 duo of sophomore Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto completed a 21-18, 21-19 win over Zana Muno and Abby Van Winkle to pull the dual even at two-all. The win is Hallgren and Poletto's ninth straight.
At the top court, the Trojans' pair of senior Abril Bustamante and sophomore Tina Graudina defeated Megan and Nicole McNamara, 21-13, in the first set; but fell, 21-18, in the second. The Trojans' prowess from the service line came to life in the third as the duo claimed several aces to close out a 15-10 win for their 11th in a row and the 60th of their career together.
The Women of Troy are the only team to play in every Pac-12 tournament title dual and will await their opponent for a 1:30 p.m. PT match-up on Saturday, April 27, on Merle Norman sand.
