No. 2 USC Builds Out An 8-3 Win Over No. 5 Cal
April 06, 2019 | Women's Water Polo, Features
Trojans ride a solid first half to victory in Berkeley.
BERKELEY, CALIF. — The No. 2 USC women's water polo team churned out an important road win, building out a five-goal lead in the first half and wrapping the game with that margin still intact on an 8-3 victory over No. 5 California today in Berkeley. Maud Megens and Kelsey McIntosh knocked in two goals each in the first half as the Trojans established control of this MPSF matchup. The win improves the Trojans to 21-1 overall and to 3-1 in MPSF play.
Cal struck first with a 6-on-5 finish on its first possession of the game, but that would be all the Golden Bears would be allowed for the rest of the half. While the Trojan defense locked up its hosts, the Trojans fired off six straight goals to build a 6-1 halftime lead. Not two minutes into the game, USC had pulled even early with a Maud Megens score off a setup from Alejandra Aznar. After a takeaway from goalie Amanda Longan, Kelsey McIntosh converted with a counterattack lob, and USC had the lead with 5:20 on the clock. On a 6-on-5 soon after, Aznar sizzled in the score to make it 3-1. In the final minute of the first, Megens had her second of the day, and USC had a 4-1 lead on the Golden Bears to go into the second. A defensive stalemate ensued for the first four minutes of the second until McIntosh notched her second with a strike as the teams pulled even on a power play. Less than a minute later, after a Trojan takeaway at 2-meters, Denise Mammolito sliced in a crosscage rocket to net a 6-1 lead for the Trojans that would hold through to halftime.
In the third, USC's offense hit a lull, while Cal broke its silence with a goal on its opening possession to end almost 16 minutes of a defensive shutout by the Trojans. The Bears got another to go midway through the third to make it 6-3 while USC came up empty at the other end. Mireia Guiral, McIntosh and Longan each made key stops for the USC defense in the fourth, and then Megens gave USC a much-needed offensive lift with a bar-in rocket with 2:42 to go. Up 7-3, USC was in good position to close out the win, and after USC turned away a late Cal 6-on-4 situation, Bayley Weber's last-chance try just trickled through to wrap the game as an 8-3 USC victory.
The Trojans now return home to set up for another MPSF matchup. Prior to USC's 1 p.m. game on Saturday (April 13) against Arizona State, the Trojans will honor their graduating seniors and captains — Courtney Fahey and Amanda Longan — in a pregame Senior Day ceremony.
