Over the last few weeks, the USC football team put in work to remodel an apartment at the Jenesse Center, a local domestic violence prevention and intervention center.
The Jaffe Family Foundation and the Kramer Family Foundation endowed the project, which allowed USC football players and USC head coach Clay Helton to renovate a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment. The Trojans spent back-to-back weekends painting, cleaning and decorating the space, which will be used as an emergency unit for families seeking shelter from domestic violence.
When a woman goes to the Jenesse Center in need of immediate intervention from abuse, she and her children could be assigned to a bedroom in the emergency unit the Trojans just refurbished. Over the course of a year, the USC Football emergency unit could provide a home for up to 20 families.
Once the families enroll in the Jenesse Center's full-time program, they can leave the emergency unit and live in another Jenesse Center site for up to two years, rent-free.
"We're so grateful that USC's Trojan Outreach Department is again partnering with us and even enhancing Jenesse's vision of providing safe spaces for families to heal," said Karen Earl, the CEO of the Jenesse Center. "We want to shine a light on the importance of appropriate beautiful housing where women and children also have access to comprehensive services that will enable them to begin their journey to a new beginning. We are grateful for this partnership that helps us to save lives and restore hope in the communities we serve."
Trojan Outreach has partnered with Jenesse Center in the past, when the USC women's basketball team helped renovate a separate unit. USC will continue to support the Jenesse Center in the future, including a presentation during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The Jaffe Family, who helped endow this project, hosted a football community service dinner for some of the Trojans' most active volunteers over the years.
