USC Holds Off Hawai’i to Move into NCAA Contender’s Final
May 04, 2019 | Women's Beach Volleyball, Features
The Women of Troy won their 20th match on Gulf Shores sand in a 3-0 sweep of the Wahine
GULF SHORES, Ala. – The top-seeded USC beach volleyball team (31-5) eliminated seventh-seeded Hawai'i (28-11) from the 2019 NCAA Championship with a 3-0 victory on Saturday, May 4.
The Women of Troy advance to meet fifth-seeded LSU (31-7) in the contender's bracket final on Sunday, May 5, at 9:30 a.m. CT (7:30 a.m. PT). The winner of that dual will advance to the championship dual to face No. 2-seed UCLA (34-3).
The Trojans improved to 14-3 all-time against the Wahine and collected the program's 20th win on the sands of Gulf Shores (20-7).
Just like they did against the Waves yesterday, the bottom three USC pairs secured straight-set wins to clinch the dual for the Trojans. The first to finish was the No. 4 pair where junior Joy Dennis and sophomore Maja Kaiser took down Hi'ilawe Huddleston and Kylin Loker, 21-14, 21-15 for a 1-0 Trojan lead.
One court up, sophomore Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto put a 21-14, 22-20 win over Morgan Martin and Pani Napoleon on the board to give USC a 2-0 lead over UH. Only moments later, the Trojans' No. 5 pair of junior Cammie Dorn and freshman Mollie Ebertin delivered the clinching point with a 21-17, 21-16 win over Norene Iosia and Sofia Russo. Ebertin—celebrating her birthday—had the final block of the match to seal the win
With the dual decided, matches at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions were each suspended. At the No. 1 spot, senior Abril Bustamante and sophomore Tina Graudina fought out a 24-22 win over Emily Maglio and Amy Ozee, but trailed, 14-13, when the second set was stopped. At the No. 2 position, senior Terese Cannon and sophomore Sammy Slater went to extra points for a 22-20 win over Ari Homayun and Julia Scoles in the first set and held a big 16-7 lead in the second when play stopped.
The Trojans will face the Tigers in a dual to be shown live on ESPN2. USC owns a 2-1 edge in the all-time series with Louisiana State and claimed a 4-1 win over LSU on March 10, this spring, in the East Meets West Invitational in Manhattan Beach, Calif. ESPN will also provide individual court coverage via the WatchESPN app or on ESPN3.
