Junior Issei Tanabe carded his third consecutive sub-par round while sophomore Charlie Reiter joined him under par to lead the USC men's golf team in the first round of the Nike Golf Collegiate Invite at the Pumpkin Ridge G.C. in Witch Hollow, Ore., on Sunday (Sept. 29).
The Trojans, playing without freshman Yuxin Lin who won the Asia-Pacific Amateur title in China on Sunday, finished the first round at 1-over 285 in a tie for 10th in the 15-team field, 15 back of first-place Oklahoma.
Tanabe, who was USC's second-highest finisher in the season-opener behind Lin, is tied for eighth at 3-under 68 after his strong first round that saw birdies on 7, 8 and 18. It was his third consecutive 68.
Reiter was USC's only other player under par today and is tied for 26th at at 1-under 70. He was 2-under after his first nine, including birdies on 13 and 18 and got to three-under with a birdie on 4 before a triple on 5. He got back under par with a birdie on 9 to close the day.
Junior Kaito Onishi, in his season-debut round, carded a 2-over 73 that saw two birdies and an eagle on the par 4 eighth hole. He is tied for 50th.
Senior Kyle Suppa, who had two birdies today, is tied for 54th at 3-over 74 while sophomore Cameron Henry is 74th at 11-over 82.
USC will tee off with Baylor and TCU on Monday beginning at 8:40 a.m.
