Host George Mason Men's Volleyball Upsets No. 12 USC In AVCA Men's Showcase

Hayden Wagner had 14 kills while hitting .538 to help the host George Mason men's volleyball team post a 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 upset sweep over No. 12 USC on the first day of the AVCA Men's Showcase tournament on Friday (Jan. 10) in Fairfax, Va.

George Mason of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association evened its 2019 record to 1-1. USC, playing its first road match of 2019, also moved to 1-1 on the year.Â

In the day's other match, USC's fellow Mountain Pacific Sports Federation member Stanford defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology of the EIVA, 21-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-14.

On Saturday (Jan. 11), the teams will switch opponents. The Trojans will play NJIT at 5 p.m. ET, while George Mason hosts No. 7 Stanford at 7 p.m. ET.

Brandon Browning and Billy Fauntleroy each had 10 kills for USC, while Cole Paxson had 8 digs. Freshman middle blocker Lucas Frassrand made his first career start and hit .500 with 5 kills and 2 blocks.

Sam Greenslade added 8 kills (hitting .429), 6 digs and 3 blocks for George Mason, while Jack Reese had 7 kills (hitting .750) and Trevor Kennan had 8 digs.

George Mason hit .443 to USC's .287. The Patriots also had more blocks (6.5 to 3.5), digs (24 to 19) and aces (3 to 1).

USC fought back from a 9-6 deficit in the first set to tie it at 15-15 and then went up 17-15, but George Mason quickly caught up at 17-17 and the set stayed tight until the Patriots scored the final 2 points while hitting .522 (the Trojans hit .467). USC jumped out to a 10-6 edge in the second set, but George Mason tied it at 11-11 and then moved out to a 17-13 margin while holding off the Trojans the rest of the way. USC scored 3 straight points to tie the third set at 7-7 and then later used a 2-0 run to again tie it at 17-17, but George Mason then had its own 2-point run to forge a 20-18 lead and the Trojans could not recover as the Patriots tallied the match's final 4 points while hitting .429.
