USC Women Cooled By Colorado’s Hot Second Half
January 10, 2020 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans take a 66-53 Pac-12 loss in Boulder.
BOULDER, COLO. — The USC women's basketball team was undone by a big third quarter from host Colorado, which landed five 3-pointers in that frame to take over the lead from the Trojans and work its way toward a final 66-53 win in Boulder. USC goes to 8-7 overall and to 0-4 in Pac-12 play with the loss, while the Buffs improve to 13-2, 2-2.
USC outpaced Colorado's 25-percent shooting in the first half by going 31.3 percent from the floor with a balanced attack fueled by offense from four Trojans. Senior Kayla Overbeck led USC with seven points and four rebounds at the break, and she'd become the first player in double digits in the game. But after allowing just seven points by the Buffs in the second quarter, USC saw Colorado explode for 27 in the third thanks in large part to five 3-pointers landed as the hosts turned a five-point USC lead into a 50-37 Colorado advantage by the end of the third. Colorado's offensive outburst left the Buffs shooting 38.3 percent from the floor in the game to USC's 29 percent. The Buffs nailed nine 3-pointers to three by the Trojans and outrebounded their visitors 50-31. USC shot 53.6 percent from the floor in the second half.
USC wound up with Angel Jackson as its top scorer with 12 points, while Overbeck and Endyia Rogers had 11 apiece. Colorado received a game-high 13 points from Quinessa Caylao-Do and Emma Clarke, who also hit three 3-pointers each for the Buffs.
Colorado opened up on an 8-0 rally, but USC fired back by closing the first with an 8-0 run of its own — sparked by a 3-pointer from Desiree Caldwell — to finish out 10 minutes of play with the Buffs up 16-15. In the second quarter, USC tightened up its defense and allowed just seven CU points while the Trojans got a combined 10 points from freshmen Endyia Rogers and Angel Jackson. That effort tugged USC into a 25-23 lead by halftime.
The Buffs found their scoring touch in the third quarter, knocking down five 3-pointers to build out a double-digit lead thanks to an 8-0 run that made it a 48-36 Colorado advantage in the final minute of the frame. Overbeck got to double digits with a free throw, only to see CU get the last word of the third and go up 50-37 entering the fourth. The Trojans carved the deficit down to eight early in the fourth, but the Buffs started getting to the stripe while landing another big three to go up 56-42 with six minutes to go. A short spurt by USC got the deficit to single digits at 58-49 with 3:50 remaining, but another 8-0 rally by Colorado ended USC's hopes of a comeback maneuver as the Buffs wrapped up the 66-53 win over the Trojans.
