No. 19 ASU Steals Triple-OT Win From Trojans In Tempe
January 31, 2020 | Women's Basketball, Features
Sun Devils hit a three with 2 seconds left to win an epic Pac-12 battle.
TEMPE, ARIZ. — The USC women's basketball team took another ranked opponent into overtime, stretching an epic battle with No. 19 host Arizona State into triple overtime before a back-breaking 3-pointer from the Sun Devils stole a 76-75 victory from the visiting Trojans. USC had overcome a 12-point deficit and got late buckets to force overtime, then double overtime, then triple overtime — the first for USC since 2001 — until that heart-breaking three snapped that trend. The loss puts the Trojans at 11-9 overall and 3-6 in Pac-12 play, while No. 19 ASU improves to 16-5, 6-3. The game was USC's second straight OT game and third of the year. USC had never before had back-to-back overtime games on record in program history.
A combined 28 first-half turnovers made for a herky jerky first 20 minutes, although the host Sun Devils were able to steady their ship by shooting 48 percent from the floor to USC's 36 percent. That helped account for ASU's 28-20 lead by halftime. In the next stretch, USC took far better care of the ball, committing just six turnovers in the next 35 minutes of play while ASU committed 13. USC outscored the Sun Devils 31-23 in the third and fourth quarters to bring up the epic overtime battle.
By the final buzzer at the close of triple-OT, USC had shot 38.4 percent from the floor behind ASU's 39.5 percent. USC was 6-of-22 from 3-point range while ASU went 4-of-16. From the line, USC was 13-of-15, and ASU was 12-of-18. The Sun Devils also won out on the boards 53-42.
USC was paced on the offensive end by freshman Endyia Rogers' 30 points. Fellow freshman Alissa Pili was next with 18, and Aliyah Jeune added 13 for the Trojans. ASU received 24 points from Reili Richardson, who also landed the game-winning 3-pointer. Robbi Ryan added 11 points, and Kiara Russell had 10.
The Trojans and Sun Devils traded the lead seven times, with USC edging ahead 7-4 on buckets from Alissa Pili and Endyia Rogers before ASU ended the quarter with a 5-0 spurt to lead it 13-9 after 10 minutes of action. Turnovers continued to interrupt the flow on both ends, but it was ASU that was able to calm down and generate an 11-3 rally that eclipsed Aliyah Jeune's first 3-pointer of the morning. The surge took the Sun Devils to a 28-16 lead before Angel Jackson knocked down a jumper and Rogers wrapped the half with a trip to the line to make it 28-20 ASU at the break.
Another 6-0 ASU stretch had USC in a 12-point hole again, but USC carved it down on a 3-pointer from Rogers and a runner from Jeune to make it 34-27 with 4:10 on the clock in the third. The Trojans would chisel ASU's advantage down to four by the end of the third with Desiree Caldwell's floater to make it 40-36 ASU late. USC's first lead since the first quarter came thanks to a 7-0 run by the Trojans. Sparked by a 3-pointer from Rogers, Jeune planted two free throws, and then Rogers found Kayla Overbeck underneath to take the Trojans ahead 43-42 with 8:15 on the clock. ASU struck back, nudging ahead 51-48 with a three-point play and a bucket with 45 seconds left. Rogers would coolly take it to the hoop next, and USC had it locked up 51-51 with 28 ticks left in regulation. The Trojan defense snuffed ASU's look at the winner, and USC was on its way to another overtime game.
In the first OT, ASU got up by four on a 3-pointer with 2:30 on the clock, but USC was undeterred. Rogers stood tall at the line for two, then later scored a flashy bucket to make it 59-57 ASU with 1:25 to go. With nine seconds left, Pili would lock things even to bring up another OT with it locked at 60-60. The second stretch was just as wild. And the Trojans were unfazed still. Pili nailed a 3-pointer at 3:40 to build a 63-61 USC lead, but ASU stole it back pretty quickly. A minute later, it was USC behind by two, and the Trojans would trail 68-64 with 1:30 to go. Then Rogers dropped a three, and Overbeck nabbed a steal. ASU hit the back end of a visit to the line to lead it 69-67 with 10 seconds left. Overbeck would clean up a USC miss to snarl it back up with 3 seconds left, and the teams were on to triple-overtime with a 69-69 lockup.
It triple-OT it was a back-and-forth battle. Rogers hit first for her 30th points of the day, and Overbeck nailed two free throws. But ASU had a response each time. Even at 73-73, Rogers found Overbeck for another big bucket in the paint to go up 75-73 with 1:15 remaining. On its heels, ASU came up with an offensive board with just ticks to go, and wound up landing a go-ahead 3-pointer with just 2 seconds on the clock. That wasn't quite enough time for the Trojans to get a good look out of their timeout, and the Sun Devils breathed a sign of relief in escaping with a 76-75 win.
