Brunching For Good
February 10, 2020 | Trojan Outreach, Features
The 2020 Fight On, Give Back Brunch was an event filled with gratitude and appreciation. Though there were families from the Union Rescue Mission being served, those doing the serving felt the most appreciative.
Trojan student-athletes volunteered their Sunday morning to the cause. The women's soccer team, swim team and other USC sports teams all came together for an opportunity to connect with their community.
Hannah White, a freshman on the women's soccer team, felt honored to participate.
"We're so blessed that we don't have to worry about getting our next meal." White said. "So to be able to take the weight off of them, even if only for a few hours, means a lot. We want them to not have any worries here."
White was true to her word as she spent nearly all of her time playing with the children in the families and giving parents time to themselves. She genuinely wanted to connect and bond with each of the children and seemed to be able to do so. From relay races to hide and go seek, White and her teammates were keeping the younger kids very entertained.
You could see how at peace each family was while they were enjoying their all-you-can-eat style brunch. Abigail Miller of the swim team wanted to focus on the parents just as much as White was focusing on the children.
"You can see the moms light up when they see their children running around, smiling and being social," Miller said. "I love being able to have that impact on the parents, just as much as the kids."
Professor Miki Turner concluded the brunch with some wise words to live by. Once her speech wrapped up, the same kids that seemed weary of the brunch initially acted as if they did not want to leave.
Trojan student-athletes like Miller and White bonded with parents and children alike to create a brunch that everyone involved won't soon forget.
