February 21, 2020 | Women's Water Polo, Features
The Trojans topped LMU today to get in winning mode in Irvine.
IRVINE, CALIF. — The No. 4 USC women's water polo team churned out a 20-8 win over No. 16 LMU to kick off the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. With a trio of Trojans hitting hat tricks along the way, USC was in control throughout. Now 8-1 overall, USC moves along in group play to face either host UC Irvine or Long Beach State tomorrow (Feb. 22) at 11:45 a.m. to fight for a spot in tomorrow afternoon's semifinals.
In today's bout with LMU, USC got out to a 3-0 lead and had seven different Trojans hit the back of the net to make it a 7-2 USC lead after eight minutes of action. Redshirt freshman goalie Erin Tharp snuffed two 5-meter penalty shots along the way to anchor a stingy USC defense in that first frame. In the second, only one Lion goal got through, while Grace Tehaney and Denise Mammolito both worked their ways to first-half hat tricks to help pace the Trojans to a 13-3 halftime lead. Tharp gave way to freshman Carolyne Stern in the second half, and it was a quiet third period on both ends before the fourth erupted into an offensive onslaught. The Trojans piled on seven more goals in the fourth while LMU tallied four. Randi Reinhardt recorded three straight goals to open the fourth and set USC solidly on its course to a final 20-8 Trojan victory.
