Abdulghany, Garvey, Nam all among top 7 after two rounds
Junior Alyaa Abdulghany fired a pair of 1-under 71s while junior Amelia Garvey and sophomore Malia Nam carded second-round 3-under 69s to lead the shorthanded No. 2 Trojans to the 36-hole lead after the first day of the Bruin Wave Invitational on Monday (Feb. 24) at the San Luis Obispo (Calif.) C.C.
Â
The Trojans, forced to play without a drop score after junior Gabriela Ruffels had to withdraw in the first round with an injury, rallied late to take over first at 6-over 582 (300-282), passing Northwestern (9-over 585). UCLA is third (12-over 588).
Â
USC is after its second straight win and its fifth overall at the Bruin Wave. The Trojans will tee off Tuesday with the Wildcats and Bruins beginning at 8:20 a.m.
Â
Abdulghany is tied for second at 2-under 142 (71-71), six shots out of first, and now has 12 rounds of par or better this year, one off the team lead. She knocked in four birdies against three bogeys in both rounds as she shoots for her third top 10 this season.
Â
Garvey is fourth at par 144 (75-69) thanks to her team-high-tying fourth round under 70. She opened her second round 3-under through four holes and was holding steady until a double on 14. She closed, however, with birdies on 16 and 18.
Â
Nam's second-round 69 was her best of the season. She turned at par, but closed with a 3-under back 9 and is seventh at 2-over 146 (77-69). Nam has three top 16 finishes this year but is looking for her first top 10.
Â
Senior Allisen Corpuz is tied for 15th at 6-over 150 (77-73). She is in line for her sixth top 19 this season with an angle on her fifth top 10.
