No. 1 USC Comes Up Short Of Triton Invitational Title
February 09, 2020 | Women's Water Polo, Features
Trojans fall to UCLA 7-5 in the final in La Jolla for first loss of 2020.
LA JOLLA, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC women's water polo team came up short of a seventh straight title at the Triton Invitational after taking a loss to No. 3 UCLA in today's final. The Trojans had opened a rainy day in La Jolla with a 14-11 comeback win over host No. 7 UC San Diego in the semis, but the Bruins broke up a fourth-period tie with back-to-back goals to secure a 7-5 win over the Trojans in the title match. USC goes to 6-1 overall with its first loss of the year.
Grace Tehaney was the driving offensive force for USC in the semifinal, as the sophomore registered a career-high five goals. Four of those came in the second half, including an equalizer at 9-9 to set up the Trojans for their push to victory. It had been tied or a one-goal margin throughout the game until Elise Stein added to Tehaney and Kelsey McIntosh's goals at the end of the third to net an 11-9 USC advantage early in the fourth. From there, USC settled into control of things. Goalie Holly Parker made a big block, and then later Bayley Weber earned a 5-meter for McIntosh to finish off, and USC was up 12-9 and well on its way to the final 14-11 win and that ticket to the title match.
Up against No. 3 UCLA in the championship bout, USC was playing catchup again. The Trojans trailed 2-1 at the end of the first and were down 5-3 until Tehaney and McIntosh went back-to-back to snarl the game at 5-5. UCLA answered with back-to-back goals of its own in the fourth, and the Trojans would be unable to break through in the last six minutes of action in taking a 7-5 loss to miss out on the Triton Invite title.
USC now turns to its home opener coming up this weekend. The Trojans will host UC Irvine at 12 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 15) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
