No. 4 USC Beach Falls to No. 10 Grand Canyon

The Women of Troy suffered their second straight 3-2 loss at the Hilton Head Island Invitational
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – No. 4-ranked USC beach volleyball (1-2) dropped a second straight 3-2 decision at the Hilton Head Island Invitational on Sunday, March 1; this time to No. 10 Grand Canyon (6-1).
GCU's win over the Trojans is the program's first in eight meetings and makes the Lopes only the 10th team ever to log a win over the Women of Troy.
The teams traded straight-set wins at the bottom of the lineup. At the No. 4 position, senior Joy Dennis and freshman Harper Hallgren got a 21-19, 21-18 win over Katie Hess and Natalie Honzovicova for the Trojans' first point, but GCU answered with a win at five.
Each of the top three courts went three sets with the Nos. 1 and 3 positions ending in rapid succession. At three, freshmen Audrey Nourse and Nicole Nourse dropped a 21-19 first set to Ayana Evans and Katie Sarber, but fought back to get a third set with a 21-18 win in set two. Evans-Sarber sealed the win with a 15-12 score in the third to give GCU a momentary 2-1 lead.
At the No. 1 position, junior Haley Hallgren and grad Hailey Harward had the 21-18 win in the first set but went to a third after falling, 21-17, in set two to Bella Bauman and Teagan DeFalco. The Lopes built a lead in the third and finished off a 15-13 win to clinch the dual.
USC scored its final point from court two where freshman Kyla Doig and junior Sammy Slater took 23-21, 23-25, 15-9 win over Jessica Stansfield and Hannah Towne.
The Trojans are back in action to conclude the tournament with a dual against No. 3 Florida State at 2:30 p.m. ET.
