USC Women Show Heart, Fall 73-66 To No. 8 UCLA In Las Vegas
March 06, 2020 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans bow out of the Pac-12 Tournament after a gutsy performance in the quarterfinals.
LAS VEGAS, NEV. — The USC women's basketball team was left to wonder what might have been in its rubber match with rival UCLA after foul trouble stalled out the Trojans in tonight's Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinals in Las Vegas. USC led 11-0 early on, but the flow was interrupted by fouls as the Trojans wound up with a 73-66 loss to No. 8 UCLA. USC goes to 17-14 overall with the defeat, while UCLA improves to 26-4 and advances to the tournament semifinals.
USC jumped out to an 11-0 lead before being stymied by 10 fouls in the first half. That allowed the Bruins some room to maneuver, and UCLA would edge ahead by halftime. USC had shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half to UCLA's 39.5 percent, while the Trojans were ahead on the boards 19-16. The whistle continued to blow against the Trojans in the second, as Pac-12 Freshman of the Year fouled out along with Endyia Rogers to stymie USC's hopes of fighting back. UCLA would wrap the game shooting 37.8 percent from the floor to USC's 41.7 percent, and the Bruins ended up ahead on the boards 44-38.
Four Trojans hit double digits in the game, led by freshman Endyia Rogers' 18 points and five assists. She'd foul out, along with fellow freshman Alissa Pili, who added 11 point in her limited minutes. Senior captain Kayla Overbeck shouldered the load while collecting four fouls, finishing with her first career double-double as a Trojan with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Aliyah Jeune added 11 points for the Trojan cause.
UCLA received a game-high 26 points and 15 rebounds from Michaela Onyenwere along with 14 points from Natalie Chou and 11 from Lindsey Corsaro.
USC dominated early, with Kyra White tallying five points in a 9-0 USC rally to open the game. That included the freshman's second 3-pointer of the season, which prompted a quick timeout by the Bruins. Two free throws from Alissa Pili made it an 11-0 surge before referee whistles started to interrupt the Trojans' momentum. Kayla Overbeck shouldered the load in the paint for a stretch while Pili was sidelined with two early fouls, and back-to-back buckets from the captain got USC ahead 20-5. UCLA found its scoring touch next, Burt Endyia Rogers had the last word to wrap the first with USC up 23-12.
The foul count tipped 10-4 against USC by halftime as the Bruins edged out ahead. Alyson Miura continued her 3-point streak with a bomb that made it 29-25 Trojans, but the Bruins answered with one of their four threes nailed in the second. Another bucket followed, and UCLA had its first lead at 30-29 with 5:15 on the clock. Rogers would produce all of USC's scoring in the next stretch as she reached 15 first-half points, although USC would trial 37-36 by halftime.
Pili would tug the Trojans ahead 38-37 early in the third, but another foul sent her back to the bench and the Bruins answered with a 7-0 run to a 44-38 lead. USC was totally undeterred. After a Bruin bucket made it 46-40, the Trojans got a spark from captain Overbeck. A three-point play from the senior lit the fuse for the Trojans, who rattled off a 12-0 run to close the third, stealing back the lead as Overbeck moved into double digits. After a three from Aliyah Jeune, Rogers ended the frame with a three-point play, and USC was up 52-46 entering the fourth.
UCLA scored the first seven of the fourth to edge ahead 53-52, but again USC kept defying the odds. As three Trojans held four fouls, USC got things even at 60-60 with 5:20 to go. But Rogers would foul out, and UCLA mounted a 7-0 run to lead it 67-60 with 3:05 on the clock. The Trojans fought on and got a late bucket from Desiree Caldwell to make it 71-66 with 45 seconds left, only to see more free throws fall for the Bruins as UCLA emerged with a 73-66 win.
