USC Women’s Basketball Takes Over In Second Half To Beat CBU 69-58
November 30, 2022 | Women's Basketball
Taylor Bigby and Kayla Williams hit double digits for the first time as Trojans tonight.
LOS ANGELES — The USC women's basketball team turned the tide on visiting California Baptist, overcoming a first-half deficit to post a final 69-58 win with Destiny Littleton and Kadi Sissoko both recording double-doubles along the way to undefeated USC's seventh straight win of the season.
USC was plagued by 17 first-half turnovers as the Trojans lost ground to CBU and was in a 27-25 hole at halftime. USC was outshooting CBU 32 percent to 29.4 percent from the floor, but those turnovers stymied the Trojans' progress in those first 20 minutes as they trailed things at the break. Tidying things up in the second, USC finished with 26 turnovers while picking up its scoring pace. USC outscored CBU 21-9 in the third frame and finished out the game shooting 39.3 percent from the floor to outpace the Lancers' final 33.3 percent. USC controlled the boards to the tune of a 50-25 margin.
Four Trojans finished in double digits on the night, led by Destiny Littleton's 16 points and career-high 14 rebounds for her first career double-double. Kadi Sissoko also added a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Kayla Williams scored 13 points and Taylor Bigby added 11 for their first double-digit games as Trojans. CBU received 14 points from Grace Schmidt and 12 from Dorcas Wu.
Taylor Bigby was the spark for the Trojans when the Lancers edged into the lead midway through the first frame. She drained a three with 3:15 on the clock to set USC off on a 7-0 surge capped by a bucket from Koi Love to take the Trojans ahead 14-19. CBU fired back, though, sinking a three to go on a 6-0 surge that had the Lancers on top 15-14 at the end of the first. USC would come up empty from the floor for almost four minutes to open the first as CBU crept ahead 22-16 before Kadi Sissoko slipped in a score at 6:10 to make it 22-18. CBU would stay in the lead down the stretch, although Williams would bury her second 3-pointer to carve down the deficit to 27-25 entering halftime.
USC started to clean things up in the third while clicking off a 6-0 scoring run to take back the lead it lost in the first quarter. Kayla Williams worked her way into double digits for the first time this season with a successful trip to the free-throw line to get USC ahead 33-30. Later, Koi Love and Destiny Littleton sparked a USC rally that featured a steal and finish from Taylor Bigby to help build out a 40-32 USC lead with 3:03 on the clock in the third. Bigby would have the last word of the third enlisting USC to a 10-point lead at 46-36, and the Trojans were in a groove entering the fourth. Another three from Williams came just before Littleton secured her double-double with her 10th points of the night, and USC was enjoying a 55-39 lead early in the fourth. By the final buzzer, USC still had a double-digit lead in place, finishing with a 69-58 victory.
