It’s Another Win For Undefeated USC Women’s Basketball With 71-44 Victory Over San José State
December 06, 2022 | Women's Basketball
Trojans improve to 9-0 in holding the Spartans to 27 percent from the floor at Galen Center.
LOS ANGELES — The USC women's basketball team took control in the second quarter and stayed the course to another double-digit victory in beating visiting San Jose State 71-44 tonight at Galen Center. The undefeated Trojans now boast a 9-0 overall record to mark their best start since the 2018-19 season. The Spartans go to 1-7 overall with the loss.
USC overcame a slow start with a 14-0 rally that spanned the first and second quarters to maneuver into the lead. A 9-0 USC run came later in the second, and the Trojans were up 34-18 at halftime thanks to a 41.4 percent scoring pace. San Jose State was shooting 23.1 percent in the first half, although the Spartans were leading on the boards 21-18 by the break. USC had forced 16 turnovers out of its guest while committing eight of its own in those first 20 minutes of play. The Trojans would wrap the game shooting 44.8 percent from the floor to beat out SJSU's 27.4 percent. The Spartans still won out on the board by a marked 47-33 margin, but 24 Spartan turnovers along with some stingy USC defense kept the hosts rolling to victory.
USC received a game-high 17 points from Kadi Sissoko along with 11 points from Kayla Williams, while San Jose State was led by Aaron Nichols' 10 points and 10 rebounds from Nailea Nicholas.
In a slow start out of the gates for the Trojans, the Spartans capitalized and crafted an early 7-2. It wasn't until the final two minutes that USC was able to piece together a rally, with Taylor Bigby converting a steal into a bucket that helped USC get within two. Alyson Miura hit a diving Kadi Sissoko for a finish in the paint next to tie it up, and a free throw from Sissoko had USC with its first lead of the game, up 12-11 to close the first frame. That USC surge expanded to a 14-0 run as the Trojans pulled out farther ahead in the second quarter. USC rattled off the first nine points of the frame while Sissoko worked her way into double digits for the eighth time this season. Her 11th points of the night had USC up 21-11 until San Jose State broke up the rally with a score off a Trojan turnover. Williams followed that with a 3-pointer, though, giving USC a boost to a 24-13 lead at 6:00. A few minutes later, Clarice Akunwafo got in on the scoring action with back-to-back scores in the paint, carrying USC ahead 29-16 with 2:45 left in the half.
In the third, Williams and Miura both added to their 3-point tallies, and after back-to-back buckets from Sissoko and a successful visit to the stripe by Rokia Doumbia, the Trojans were enjoying a 50-24 advantage with 2:40 on the clock. In the final minute of the third, Koi Love struck twice and Akunwafo added a free throw to make it a 55-28 USC lead entering the fourth. Destiny Littleton and Williams each nailed threes in the fourth, and Love added a score in the paint to take the Trojans to a 65-32 lead midway through the fourth, and USC was well on its way to the final 71-44 victory over the visiting Spartans.
