PULLMAN, Wash. – The USC baseball team rallied to tie it late, but couldn't hold on in the series finale at Washington State, falling 5-3 to the Cougars.

USC falls to 21-20 overall on the season and 6-15 in Pac-12 play. The Cougars improve to 19-23 overall and 9-15 in conference action.

Washington State came out of the gates hot, scoring two runs on a pair of RBI singles in the first. USC starter Charlie Hurley settled in, however, holding the Cougars scoreless over his next 5.1 innings of work. He had a career-high seven strikeouts on the afternoon.

USC would get a run back on a sacrifice fly by Trevor Halsema in the sixth and then Garret Guillemette singled home the tying run to make it 2-2 in the seventh. Washington State loaded the bases and put up three runs in the eighth to take the lead for good, however.

Tyresse Turner homered in the ninth, but that was it for USC on the day.
