USC Women’s Basketball Shocks No. 2 Stanford 55-46 At Galen Center
January 15, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Trojans took down the Cardinal for the first time since 2014 behind 18 points from Destiny Littleton and a double-double from Okako Adika.
LOS ANGELES — The USC women's basketball team shocked the No. 2 team in the nation, handing Stanford just its second loss of the year as the Trojans never trailed the Cardinal on the way to a 55-46 victory today at Galen Center. It was the first win for USC over a No. 2 opponent since the Trojans topped Stanford at home in 2008 and second win over an AP top-five opponent under head coach Lindsay Gottlieb. The home sweep was anchored by Destiny Littleton, who scored another game-high 18 points to help her Trojans improve to 13-4 overall and to 3-3 in Pac-12 play. No. 2 Stanford goes to 17-2 overall and now 5-1 in Pac-12 action with the upset by USC.
USC received a game-high 18 points from Destiny Littleton along with the first double-double of Okako Adika's season as a Trojan on 11 points and 11 rebounds. USC played just seven Trojans in the game, while Stanford had 13 Cardinal see action, with Cameron Brink the only one in double digits with 11 points and 14 rebounds on the day.
USC connected on three consecutive 3-pointers to answer buckets by Stanford and scoot the Trojans ahead 33-26 with 5:20 on the clock. Bigby nailed two of those, and Littleton became the first player in double digits with hers. A Stanford three at 4:25 had things as a three-point game, but a relentless Littleton fired back with a bucket for a USC boost. It was 36-33 after two Stanford free throws at 2:32, and then USC would wrap the quarter with seven straight points from Kayla Williams — four free throws and a buzzer-beating three — to lead it 43-33 entering the fourth. Adika knocked down another key three at 8:45 to bump USC ahead 46-35. A 6-1 Stanford push made it 47-41 with 3:58 to go before Williams forced a Cardinal turnover to get USC the ball back at 3:11. The Trojans would stand strong enough from the stripe to fend off the Cardinal down the stretch, with Rayah Marshall, Littleton, Adika and Williams and knocking down key tosses from the line to help counter a 3-pointer and a bucket from Stanford in the final 30 seconds as USC closed things out on an enormous 55-46 victory over the nation's No. 2 team.
USC hits the road next to continue Pac-12 action in Washington. The Trojans visit Washington State at 7 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 20) in Pullman and then head to Seattle to take on Washington at 12 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 22).

USC never trailed in the first half after taking a quick 6-0 lead on Stanford. The Trojans and the Cardinal each shot 29 percent overall in the first twenty minutes, but USC had landed three 3-pointers to just one by Stanford to help lead it 24-19 at halftime. USC was up 20-18 on the boards to that point to help keep the Cardinal at bay. Try as it may, Stanford was unable to shake the Trojans, who built a 10-point lead entering the fourth and found the points they needed to stay in front. By the final buzzer, USC had shot just 27.3 percent from the floor, but was 42.1 percent from 3-point range (8-of-19) to counter the Cardinal's 30.9 percent overall shooting and 4-of-21 effort from beyond the arc. USC committed just seven turnovers to 14 by the Cardinal, who did win out on the boards 40-36.LOCKER ROOM SCENES! 💦✌️ pic.twitter.com/3O4909WF7D

USC punched up a 6-0 lead to start the game before the Cardinal broke through at the 6:00 mark. The first 3-pointer of the day came from USC's Okako Adika, who buried on at 3:35 to take USC ahead 9-2 before Destiny Littleton knocked down a long two to make it 11-2 Trojans. Stanford got one to go at 1:20, but that was it, and USC gripped an 11-4 advantage after eight minutes of action. The Cardinal was able to reel in the Trojans and get the margin to one on its first 3-pointer of the day, making it 17-16 at 3:45. Clarice Akunwafo would come up big for the Trojans next, powering in a score from the paint and then delivering a block at the other end a minute later to get the score to a 19-17 USC lead with 1:30 left in the half. Stanford would tie it up 19-10 with 1:10 on the clock, only to see Taylor Bigby land a big 3-pointer before a USC defensive stop was followed by a buzzer-beating take to the hoop from Littleton to net a 24-19 lead for the Trojans at the break.
