Rayah Marshall Pulls In 21 Rebounds As USC Women’s Basketball Beats ASU 64-49 At Galen Center
February 03, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Kadi Sissoko scores a season-high 23 points; Trojans are now 16-0 when holding opponents to 58 or fewer points this season.
LOS ANGELES — The USC women's basketball team returned to home turf and picked up another decisive win with another stingy defensive stand in posting a 64-49 win over visiting Arizona State. While Rayah Marshall hauled in a career-high 21 rebounds, Kadi Sissoko and Destiny Littleton each delivered season-high scoring tallies to help anchor the key Pac-12 win. USC is now 17-5 overall — its best 22-game start since 1993-94 — and is 7-4 in Pac-12 play. The Sun Devils are now 7-13, 0-9.
The lead traded hands three times in the first half, with USC countering a couple early pushes by the Sun Devils to open the first two quarters and leading it 27-22 at halftime. The Trojans shot 37.9 percent from the floor in the first half to outpace ASU's 28.6 percent, and USC was leading on the boards 23-19 by the break. Both teams heated up a bit in the second half, with USC finishing out a 41.1 percent and the Sun Devils at 32.3. Behind Marshall's monster effort on the boards, USC out rebounded ASU 45-31.
USC's Sissoko led the offensive charge on the night with a season-high 23 points, while Littleton issued her second straight game with a season-high 21 points. Marshall finished just a point off a double-double, although her powerful work on the boards marked the most rebounds by a Trojan since 2016 with her 21-board tally. Arizona State was led in scoring by Tyi Skinner's 14 points and 12 from Jaddan Simmons, along with 10 from Treasure Hunt.
ASU knocked down the first bucket of the game, only to see USC fire off an 8-0 run to take an 8-3 lead just four minutes deep into the first frame. Trojan turnovers interrupted their flow for a stretch before Alyson Miura picked off an ASU pass and fed Kadi Sissoko for the transition bucket and a 10-7 USC advantage. The Sun Devils fought back to tie it 11-11, but Sissoko knocked in a 3-pointer for USC with just five ticks to go, and the Trojans were up 14-11 after 10 minutes of action. The Sun Devils struck first again with a quick 5-0 push to open the second, taking a 16-14 lead. The score snarled up twice after that before a three-point play converted by Kayla Williams nudged USC ahead 21-18, and the Trojans would stay a step ahead through to halftime. Williams had the last word before the break with a floater in the paint, and USC gripped a 27-22 advantage at halftime.
USC broke the cycle by making the first moves of the second half as Rayah Marshall got to double digits on the rebounding front and Sissoko bumped her scoring tally up to 17 points in taking the Trojans ahead 35-22 with 6:30 on the clock. USC extended its lead out to 41-24 with a 6-0 rally, although the Sun Devils found their form next and made an answering shot with a 9-0 run to carve the margin down to single digits at 41-33. Destiny Littleton would land a late and long 3-pointer, however, and USC was up 44-33 entering the fourth. Williams and Littleton wrapped threes around a single bucket by the Sun Devils to start the fourth and go up 50-35 two minutes in. USC would stay up by double digits the rest of the way, closing things out as a 64-49 victory
