No. 10 Trojans Take on No. 7 Michigan In NCAA Round of 16

USC will face Michigan in Ann Arbor for the second time this season, with a trip to Orlando and the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals on the line.
THIS WEEK:
The No. 10 ranked USC men's tennis team (21-7) will take on No. 7 ranked Michigan men's tennis for the second time this season as they face off in the NCAA Super Regional on Friday (May 12) at 1 p.m. PT at the Varsity Tennis Center.Â

The eight teams that advance out of this round will head to the USTA National  for the remaining rounds of NCAA competition taking place May 18-20. So, too, will NCAA Individual Championships be held at Complex, with singles and doubles competition running May 22-27.  Â

TROJANS IN THE RANKINGSÂ
In the ITA's latest team rankings, USC remained at No. 10 following a strong showing at the Pac-12 Championships.Â

USC boasts three Trojans in the national singles rankings with senior Stefan Dostanic leading Troy at No. 25. Trojan sophomore Peter Makk locked in the No. 39 ranking while Wojtek Marek claimed the No. 109 ranking.Â

USC also boasts the No. 13 ranked doubles pair in Stefan Dostanic and Bradley Frye. The Trojan duo of Frye and freshman Learner Tien moved up in the rankings, checking in at No. 45.Â

NOTABLE:
•     USC's Peter Makk (seven matches) and Wojtek Marek (five matches) have combed to clinch twelve total matches for the Trojans this season.Â
•     Peter Makk leads Troy in singles wins so far this season with 27 (18 of those wins coming from dual match play).Â
•     Senior Stefan Dostanic leads the Trojans in doubles wins with 23, playing with both Bradley Frye and Ryan Colby this season.Â
•     The Trojans had a travel heavy slate this spring, with only 11 total home matches scheduled, including two ITA Kickoff Weekend & two NCAA Tournament matches.Â
•     USC welcomed two mid-season additions in UCLA transfer Karl Lee and freshman Learner Tien.Â
•     So far this season, the Trojans have faced 14 top-25 ranked opponents, winning seven of those matches (#24 Vanderbilt, #15 Florida, #13 Georgia, #12 UNC, #23 Stanford and #19 Utah (twice)).Â
•     USC is 15-2 this season when claiming the doubles point, and 6-5 when losing the doubles point.Â

Under the direction of head coach Brett Masi for the fourth season, USC is making its 16th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, and 44th overall appearance. Now carrying a 21-7 overall record, the No. 10-seeded Trojans are looking to make a deep run in the tournament. With five NCAA crowns claimed since 2009, USC continues to lead the nation with 21 national championships all-time and holds a 114-38 overall record in the NCAA Tournament. USC was a No. 12 seed in 2022 in a run to the NCAA Super Regional. During USC's current 16-year run of NCAA appearances, USC has been seeded No. 1 (2012 & 2014), No. 2 (2011), No. 4 (2013 & 2017), No. 5 (2010), No. 7 (2015), No. 8 (2009 & 2019), No. 10 (2016, 2018 & 2023), No. 12 (2007 & 2021) and No. 13 (2022) — with NCAA titles captured in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014.Â

USC secured its place in the 2023 NCAA Tournament as an automatic qualifier after its dominating run to the Pac-12 Tournament Championship. The title was the fourth consecutive conference crown and seventh overall for the Trojans and improved their record to 19-7 overall. In the last NCAA tourney, USC was a No. 12 seed and reached the 2022 NCAA Super Regional.  Ranked No. 10 in the nation in the latest poll, 10 seed USC has a roster balanced by veteran and up-and-coming young talent. With momentum gained from the Pac-12 Championship, USC also boasts three ranked singles players as well as two ranked doubles pairs.Â

The No. 7 seeded Wolverines are 26-4 this season, entering the NCAA Tournament with the second highest seed in program history. The Wolverines posted back-to-back 4-0 wins last weekend in the first and second rounds with victories over Toledo and Cal. Michigan is unbeaten at 21-0 when it wins the doubles point. Ondrej Styler, the No. 8 ranked singles player was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and is riding a 14-match win streak. Patrick Maloney has won his last five matches and is ranked No. 44 with a 14-2 singles record. No. 20 Andrew Fenty boasts a career singles record of 109-43 and is 35-8 this season. In doubles, Fenty and Young are ranked No. 7 with 23 wins this season.Â
