The Trojans had the highest attended home-opener in 10 years in a 3-0 win over UC Davis

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The USC women's volleyball team (2-4) topped UC Davis (3-4) in a three-set sweep, 25-19, 25-19, 26-24, to open the Trojan Invitational at Galen Center on Friday, Sept. 8. The Women of Troy got the win to improve to 39-9 all-time in home openers and did it in front of 3,314 fans; the highest attendance for a Trojan home opener in 10 years and the third-highest all-time at Galen Center.

KEY PLAYERS

Sr. OH Skylar Fields led all players with 15 kills and did it on a season-best .484 hitting (0e, 31att) to go with eight digs.
Jr. setter Mia Tuaniga handed out 35 assists and racked up 10 digs for her second double-double of the season (17th of her career) and added two kills, two service aces, and a solo block to her final line.
Fr. OPP Madison Pietsch put together her second double-digit outing and finished with career highs of 13 kills (4e) and 28 attacks to hit .321 and added six digs and a block.
So. LIB Gala Trubint put up eight digs to go with two service aces and had one assist.
Sr. MB Lindsey Miller racked up six kills (1e, 11att) and hit .455 with two digs and a block.
For UC Davis, Olivia Utterback led with 10 kills (3e, 30att, .233) with six digs. Julia Ng had a match-high 13 digs. Amara Aimuafa had eight kills (1e) on 19 swings to hit .368.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Trojans out-hit the Aggies, .327 to .192, and had 46 kills to UC Davis' 39. Both teams had four service aces, but USC held the edge in digs, 54-44, and had four blocks to the Aggies' three.
USC hit .263 in the first set and pulled away from the Aggies for a 25-19 win with four kills from Pietsch and three more from So. MB Tyrah Ariail. Tuaniga put up 10 of her assists in the frame.
Fields and Pietsch each had five kills in the second set to power the Trojans to a second 25-19 win for a 2-0 lead in the match. USC hit .400 with 15 kills (3e) on 30 attacks to outpace the Aggies' .147 hitting percentage.
UC Davis built a four-point lead, 7-3, in the third set, but the Trojans fought back to lead by as many as five at 20-15. Fields was unconscionable and finished with nine kills (0e) on just 14 attempts to hit .543 in the third set, but UC Davis fought to stay close to the Trojans and earned a 24-all tie late in the match. Gr. OH Kalyah Williams and Pietsch each added four kills apiece to help seal the USC sweep.

UP NEXT

The Trojans face Marist (2-6) in their second match of the Invitational. The teams take the floor at 1 p.m. PT on Saturday (Sept. 9) and will be shown live on the USC Live Stream platform. Following the USC-Marist meeting, San Diego (2-4) and UC Davis play at 3:30 p.m. Admission to both matches is free to the general public.
