JuJu Watkins Nails Program-Record Nine 3-Pointers in No. 6 USC’s 94-52 Win Over CBU
December 03, 2024 | Women's Basketball
The sophomore finished with 40 points for the Trojans, joined by Kiki Iriafen, Rayah Marshall and Talia von Oelhoffen in double digits tonight.
LOS ANGELES — USC sophomore JuJu Watkins set a new program record for 3-pointers made in a game during her 40-point outburst to help pace the No. 6 USC women's basketball team to a 94-52 win over visiting California Baptist tonight at Galen Center. Watkins landed nine 3-pointers in the Trojan victory, bettering the previous record of seven while USC improved to 7-1 overall.
USC had three players in double digits by halftime as the Trojans hit at a 51.5 percent clip from the floor while burying six first-half 3-pointers. CBU shot 27.3 percent from the floor in the first half and was trailing the Trojans 23-19 on the boards as USC gripped a 50-20 lead at halftime. USC's scoring pace increased in the second half, as did Watkins' 3-point tally. The Trojans wrapped the game on 52.5-percent shooting, going 11-of-24 from 3-point range thanks to Watkins' career-high 9-of-11 effort. USC won out on the boards 42-31, and CBU finished up shooting 32.2 percent overall.
Watkins's 40-point night marked just the second 40-plus outing by a Trojan at Galen Center, with Watkins holding that record with 42 points scored in a game last season. She was joined in double digits tonight by Talia von Oelhoffen's 14 points and double-doubles from Kiki Iriafen (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Rayah Marshall (10 points, 10 rebounds). The Lancers were led in scoring by Grace Schmidt's 12 points and 10 from Claudia Fiel.
The Trojans had a steady 7-0 start to the game, aided by a quick 3-pointer off the tip from Talia von Oelhoffen and post action from Kiki Iriafen. Cal Baptist got on the board at 7:27, but the Lancer layup was sandwiched by another 7-0 USC surge. In the final minute, von Oelhoffen drained another three, and USC would wrap the first frame with a 29-11 advantage. USC's defense forced three straight shot clock violations out of the Lancers to open the second just before Talia von Oelhoffen got to double digits to carry the Trojans ahead 31-11. Kayleigh Heckel delivered her first points of the night next with a three-point play, and USC was off to the races. JuJu Watkins buried a three straight 3-pointers for the Trojan cause, helping to craft a 46-16 USC lead with 3:40 left in the first half.
The teams largely stayed in stride during the third quarter, although Watkins remained hot-handed from beyond the arc. She'd drain three more, getting to 30 points on the night while USC gripped a 78-36 lead on the way into the fourth frame. Watkins kept chugging, blowing past the previous USC single-game record for threes made with bombs No. 8 and 9 while carrying USC ahead 88-39 with 6:30 on the clock. The Lancers would manufacture a nine-point rally later in the quarter, with Aaliyah Gayles breaking up that run with a successful trip to the free-throw line, and the game would wrap up as a 94-52 USC victory.
