No. 16 USC Women's Tennis Shuts Down the Huskies Comeback Bid in a 4-3 Victory
February 10, 2024 | Women's Tennis
Senior Naomi Cheong clinched the match for the Women of Troy 7-6(7), 6-2 in the No. 3 spot
SEATTLE - No. 16 USC women's tennis prevailed in a classic affair between the Women of Troy and Washington, as they bested the Huskies in the ITA Indoor Team Championship Consolation Rounds, 4-3 on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.
The doubles point proved to be the difference. The Women of Troy won their fourth doubles point this season, making them 4-0 when they claim it. That doubles point came at the heels of the two wins in almost succession from USC. The doubles squad of #15 Eryn Cayetano/Emma Charney finished only seconds before Lily Fairclough/McKenna Koenig claimed the doubles point.
On the singles side #95 Cayetano was the first to finish at the No. 4 spot, as she posted a near clean sweep in the 6-1, 6-0 victory. The graduate student is the lone Trojan to get her second victory at the ITA tournament, as she bested North Carolina's No. 3 player and #62-ranked Abbey Forbes.
#103 Grace Piper followed soon after with a 6-2, 6-3 finish. Piper is now 13-4 overall on the season and 5-0 in duals. The final point for the Women of Troy came from senior Naomi Cheong at the No. 3 spot. Soon after Washington returned with three straight points to tie the affair, Cheong shut the door with a 7-6(7), 6-2 victory.
Up next, USC will take on No. 5-seeded Pepperdine at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Seattle Tennis Club.
