No. 5 USC Women’s Water Polo Hands No. 13 Hoosiers Their First Loss
February 23, 2024 | Women's Water Polo
Rachel Gazzaniga and Julia Janov score three apiece for the Trojans to open the Barbara Kalbus Invitational
NEWPORT BEACH, CALIF. — The No. 5 USC women's water polo team shut out No. 13 Indiana in the fourth period to help secure a 12-10 win over the Hoosiers in the opening game of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. Rachel Gazzaniga and Julia Janov led the Trojans' offensive charge with three goals apiece as USC improved to 6-2 overall while handing the Hoosiers their first loss of the season.
It was an all-out battle in the first three frames. USC would grip a two-goal lead on two occasions in the first eight minutes thanks to the sure hand of freshman Gazzaniga. She'd have her hat trick in place by halftime, but it was a one-goal game at that point with USC holding a 7-6 edge. The Hoosiers made a run in the third to take their first lead, scoring back-to-back goals before Hannah Meyer broke through to tie it up. Indiana had an answer for that, though, as well as a blast from Morgan Netherton, and USC was in a 10-9 hole entering the fourth. That's where senior Janov stepped up again, punching in a 5-meter penalty shot and then converting on a 6-on-5 to get USC back on top. Isabel Zimmerman sizzled in a score next for the Trojans, taking them out ahead 12-10 with 4:50 left to play. The USC defense held its ground the rest of the way, silencing the Hoosiers down the stretch to lock up the win.
NEXT:
USC next squares off against No. 4 Stanford at 9:15 a.m. tomorrow to round out group play at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational and fight for a spot in the afternoon semifinals out at Corona del Mar High School.
