Trojans Come Up Short at No. 18 Oregon, 5-3
April 13, 2024 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – The USC baseball team had the go-ahead run on in the ninth but were not able to complete the comeback as the Trojans fell 5-3 to No. 18 Oregon on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans loaded the bases in the final frame, but a groundout ended it as USC falls to 16-18 overall and 9-7 in Pac-12 play. Oregon moves to 25-9 overall and 10-4 in conference action. The start of the game was delayed 90 minutes due to rainfall.
USC erased an early 1-0 deficit in the top of the third when Ethan Hedges hit a sac fly to bring home Austin Overn and Ryan Jackson scored on a throwing error on the play. Kevin Takeuchi would double the lead for USC, hitting a solo-shot in the fourth. The Ducks put up four runs in the bottom half of the fourth to go back in front 5-3, however.
That score would hold the rest of the way as the Ducks' bullpen tossed 4.0 scoreless innings. Eric Hammond got the start for USC and gave up three runs in 3.0 innings. Fisher Johnson gave up two runs (one earned) in his 2.1 innings of work and Brody Purcell tossed 2.2 scoreless.
Dean Carpentier led off the ninth with a single and then after two outs, Ryan Jackson singled and Jacob Galloway walked. A ground ball to first ended it, however. It was the second straight night the Trojans had the tying or go-ahead run on in the ninth.
