USC Baseball Wraps up Sweep of Washington With 6-5 Victory

IRVINE, Calif. – The USC baseball team wrapped up a sweep of Washington with a 6-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Great Park, giving USC five straight conference wins and series victories in three of their last four Pac-12 weekends.

USC won the opener 6-2 and then slugged its way to a 9-5 win on Saturday before holding off the Huskies on Sunday to complete the sweep. USC improves to 15-16 on the year and 9-5 in Pac-12 play, maintaining a hold on fourth place in the conference standings. Washington falls to 9-15-1 overall and 3-9 in conference action. After a 3-11 start to the season, the Trojans have gone 12-4 and have won six of their last seven games.

The Trojans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to RBI from Brayden Dowd and Ethan Hedges, and then went up 3-0 in the second after a solo-home run by Dean Carpentier. It was Carpentier's second homer in as many games after hitting the first of his career on Saturday.

Washington got a run back on a sacrifice fly in the third, but USC responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Kevin Takeuchi singled home a pair and the third scored on an error.

A three-run homer by Washington's AJ Guerrero made it a 6-4 game in the fifth and then Guerrero struck again with an RBI single in the ninth, but Josh Blum settled in and struck out the final batter to end the game.

Blum picked up his third save of the season in the contest, striking out two Huskies in the final inning. Xavier Martinez was awarded the win after tossing the seventh and eighth and holding Washington scoreless through both frames. Martinez was aided by a clutch double play in the seventh after Washington had runners on the corners with one out. Will Watson tossed 4.1 innings in the start and Brodie Purcell had 1.2 relief innings.
